Josh Windass has bagged 11G/A for Wrexham so far. After two subpar outings, Phil Parkinson has confirmed a Josh Windass injury fear ahead of Blackburn Rovers.
Starting from today, the New Year 2026 is well underway and so is Wrexham’s 2026 calendar. The Red Dragons have spent the previous five months of the Championship season laying a decent foundation for promotion at eleventh spot.
That said, the coming five months will decide how far Wrexham makes it in the race for Premier League football. Two wins have come for Phil Parkinson’s men in the previous seven days, and today’s Blackburn Rovers outing brings a chance to secure a hat-trick of Championship wins.
Will that be easy? Honestly, away days are often a tricky test no matter the opposition and don’t forget, there’s the question of sustaining a winning streak for Wrexham as well.
For much of the 2025/26 campaign, the club had formed an unwanted reputation of adding draws to their name, whenever they came on the back of a win.
Further, Wrexham will miss the home support at Blackburn, thus, it’s natural to fear a winless evening on the cards.
Wrexham’s best forwards in the 2025/26 season
Star striker Kieffer Moore’s participation is already lying in jeopardy for Wrexham, who has been the club’s pick of the goalscorers so far. The tall Welshman has struck 12 times in a Red Dragons shirt, with an additional 3 assists taking his total Wrexham goal contributions to 15.
After Moore, it’s Josh Windass who has bagged 11G/A for Wrexham since arriving on a free transfer in summer 2025.
Ideally, the 31 year old attacking midfielder should be leading the attack alongside Nathan Broadhead in Moore’s absence. Sadly, boss Phil Parkinson has confirmed a Windass injury fear ahead of Blackburn Rovers.
Josh Windass injury fear ahead of Blackburn Rovers
Among Wrexham fans, there are no second thoughts on Josh Windass quality in the Championship. He has delivered the goods in the second tier before, and has never looked a liability for the Reds on the pitch.
Still, Windass past two performances were below his high standards. Against Sheffield United, he did score a penalty successfully but other than that, he saw less of the ball.
Similarly, Windass looked a shadow of himself at Preston North End and even felt some discomfort moments before half time. Keeping in mind the hectic Dragons schedule at the moment, Wrexham fans might have feared a Windass injury at that instance which has come true now.
In his own words, boss Phil Parkinson relayed this update on Wrexham’s official website: “Josh has had a scan. He’s been playing with a badly bruised calf in recent weeks and we wanted to ascertain there was no further damage, so he’ll be assessed before kick-off.”
For the sake of optimism, Parkinson’s “assessed” claim doesn’t rule out Windass from playing Blackburn Rovers just yet. However, the harsh reality with most of these doubtful updates often ends in the player sitting out the upcoming matchday.
With all due respect to Blackburn Rovers, their season hasn’t gone smoothly until the halfway mark. On top of that, their attacking ranks have struggled to find the back of the net with top scorer Andri Gudjohnsen unfit for selection when they host Wrexham in a few hours.
Overall, this Rovers fixture is the type of game where Parkinson can afford to rest Windass without worrying about the scoreline. Ollie Rathbone and Sam Smith were impressive as super subs three nights before, and they must be entrusted to give a midweek rest to Josh Windass and Kieffer Moore.
