Wrexham fans laugh as £30m Manchester City claim made out of nowhere

Manchester City

Wrexham fans can’t help themselves but laugh on a £30m Manchester City January rumour that has emerged out of nowhere.

For Wrexham, dreaming big during January transfer windows has been a running tradition for the past five years. The Red Dragons make ambitious summer moves like other competitors in the division, but unlike them, Wrexham don’t keep their foot off the gas even in the winter markets.

After all, constantly finding shrewd value for money deals has gotten Wrexham to the current heights. Otherwise, Phil Parkinson’s men could have taken decades instead of years to transition from non-league to the topmost EFL tier, the EFL Championship.

So, which bargain can Wrexham struck in 2026 January? Many fans will wish for some backup fullbacks, even a midfielder on the cheap.

£30m Manchester City transfer claim involving Wrexham

But, hold on. There is a weird transfer rumour spreading like wildfire that could be the steal of the decade for Wrexham so far.

According to a report from Fichajes, Manchester City are plotting a £30m January for Wrexham’s most expensive defender Callum Doyle.

Wrexham fans, let that stunning transfer link sink in. Honestly, this Callum Doyle to Manchester City transfer link just doesn’t make sense at all no matter how sweet this update sounds to Wrexham supporters.

Callum Doyle to Manchester City rumours reality check

Coming to the reality check for this Callum Doyle to Manchester City rumour, let’s start with the proposed transfer fees in question. Over four months ago, Doyle was lured from the Etihad to the Racecourse in a permanent switch worth an estimated £7.5m.

In the meanwhile, Doyle has learned, made mistakes and gradually appears to have adapted well as a 3rd centre back behind defensive generals Dominic Hyam and Max Cleworth. Even nowadays, Doyle’s defending isn’t without his flaws and the 22 year old must know how much room for improvement still lies in his overall playstyle across 90 minutes.

Considering this, Doyle would be atmost a £10m commodity in today’s market if Wrexham were to sell and probably a £15m asset in case the club won promotion to the Premier League at the back end of May.

However, £30m is just laughable at present. Just think, his transfer value has gone up 4 times from £7.5m to £30m in nearly as many months at Wrexham. Simply put, it’s too good to be true.

Wrexham’s record transfer sales of all time

Taking Transfermarkt stats into account, the record transfer fee Wrexham ever received from a player’s sale was £1.3m by selling Bryan Hughes. The crazy part is that deal took place twenty years ago.

Without downplaying Wrexham, it’s inherently known that the Reds have been unable to add hefty transfer funds to their wallets as opposed to spending them in previous seasons. With that in mind, it’s again far too unreasonable for the Welsh outfit to make a steep jump in terms of record departures charts.

Finally, who can forget Championship legend Troy Deeney’s critiquing tone on Callum Doyle. The former Watford hero sounded encouraging when he floated a suggestion for Wrexham to sign young defenders in the mould of Manchester City star John Stones.

To be frank, he was indirectly raising questions about Doyle’s potential. The entire Reds fanbase knew Deeney’s assessment was poor, but did anyone expected it to be this wrong? When, however weird it sounds, but City themselves are rumoured to be holding Doyle in high regard over their current centre-backs.

As of now, Doyle swapping Wrexham back to his old surroundings in Manchester isn’t worth giving a thought. Yet, one needs put preparations in place for every imaginable scenario, and here, Wrexham should bite Manchester City’s hands off if the Blues lodge a concrete offer on the table.
