Wrexham fans didn’t hide their euphoric feelings upon hearing Matty James contract extension news prior to the Leicester City match.
Day 20 of the January transfer window has arrived but Wrexham are yet to open their winter signings account. On their part, the club did convey the message that they will prey for good transfer opportunities instead of running behind multiple players.
Some value for money transfer rumours have surfaced in recent days, but seems like they don’t satisfy Wrexham’s January recruitment benchmark. Since 2021, the Reds have prioritised quantity over quality but that era has come to an end. Now, Wrexham demand having players who can be a good fit for the Championship and later, the Premier League level.
That includes holding a firm grip on the futures of current star players as well. Max Cleworth is a good example in that regard, who penned a Wrexham contract extension just days ago.

Looking back on James 2024 signing, it feels surreal to acknowledge how quickly he has integrated into Wrexham’s 4-man midfield. It’s well known that George Dobson and Ben Sheaf are quite defensive-minded in the middle of the park.
Ollie Rathbone and Josh Windass love exploiting spaces as an attacking midfielder. But James is the one who helps link all of them together. Wrexham fans love him for his multitasking, and didn’t hide their feelings when they heard Matty James contract extension news.

Smith made it 1-0, and later Wrexham built on that lead to get the better of Rovers with a 2-0 win. Another fan noted: “Matty’s a highlight reel with THOSE assists. And then recently the screamer he scored himself.”
Of course, who can forget James’ thunderous strike to earn the 2-1 lead against Derby County that was enough to cap off a fourth successive Championship win. Truly, Matty James is an all-action midfielder Wrexham are lucky to have bagged on the cheap.
Such players are often hailed as “Rolls Royce” quality among fanbases. Wrexham fans also didn’t disappoint in giving James this nickname.
A third fan said: “Well deserved Matty. An absolute Rolls Royce of a player. Love watching him play.”
Should James pull off some crucial heroics against Leicester City in a few hours, Wrexham fans would even start making Man Of The Match chants for him. Let’s hope that happens, and Phil Parkinson’s men walk out of the Racecourse with all 3 points in the bag.
