Wrexham fans are thrilled after the decisive playoff decider clash against Southampton has been pushed back a day to 7th April 2026.
Recently, Wrexham fans named Southampton in unison as the only side they fear in the playoff race. It comes as the Saints chase the Reds closely and could leapfrog them in their early April faceoff.
On that front, a recent EFL announcement has come as a relief to Wrexham fans. The Reds’ playoff decider against Southampton has been pushed back a day to 7th April 2026.
In effect, Wrexham have been given an extra rest day ahead of their massive showdown with Southampton. Their early April schedule now looks perfectly balanced:
Wrexham vs West Brom – Friday, 3 April 2026, 15:00 BST
Wrexham vs Southampton – Tuesday, 7 April 2026, 20:00 BST
Wrexham vs Birmingham – Sunday, 12 April 2026, 12:00 BST
Southampton, by contrast, face a gruelling turnaround. Their schedule:
Southampton vs Arsenal – Saturday, 4 April 2026, 20:00 BST
Southampton vs Wrexham – Tuesday, 7 April 2026, 20:00 BST
The Saints will have just 72 hours between a high-stakes FA Cup tie and this virtual playoff decider against Wrexham. While it’s still manageable for an in-form Southampton side, the odds now heavily favour the Reds to emerge victorious.
Wrexham fans react to rescheduled Southampton clash
Wrexham have emerged as the clear winners from the rescheduling of their high-stakes clash with Southampton. With the Saints playing just 72 hours after an FA Cup tie against Arsenal, the Reds are now in a strong position to likely end Southampton’s playoff hopes.
Needless to say, the EFL’s confirmation of the new date has thrilled Wrexham fans. One fan summed it up: “Best possible rearrangement date, they’ll hopefully be tired after arsenal game, we play day before so will have +1 day more rest for what could be crucial game.”
A glance at Wrexham’s schedule shows the timing couldn’t be better from their perspective. The EFL simply pushed the Southampton clash back by a day, rather than squeezing it into an already crowded fixture list until the end of the season. As a result, Wrexham will enter every game in the final stretch well rested.

Another fan emphasised how Wrexham and Southampton will enter the decisive faceoff in different conditions. The supporter mentioned, “ideal, they’ll be worn out from playing Arsenal, and we get an extra days rest.”
Arsenal have been a notoriously difficult side to beat or even face this season. With the Gunners known for physically overpowering opponents in set pieces and frustrating rivals in open play, Southampton will have a tough time recovering from the FA Cup clash.
This sets the stage perfectly for Wrexham to capitalise against a potentially worn-out Saints side when they meet days later.
Wrexham saved from nightmarish end to season
One Wrexham fan particularly thanked the club’s fate for such rescheduling of the Wrexham Vs Southampton clash, saying, “glad it’s not in middle of cov/Middlesbrough & that could’ve been nightmare end to season Coyr.”
Wrexham’s Championship schedule sees them wrapping up the regular season with games against Coventry and Middlesbrough. While either of them is hard to get through, facing them consecutively gives Wrexham the toughest possible run-in ahead.
Despite such a scenario, Wrexham must be grateful they’ve been spared much more misery. The rescheduled Southampton clash could have been squeezed between Coventry and Middlesbrough to set up a nightmare run-in for Wrexham.
To Wrexham’s relief, that slot has been given to Ipswich. While both Southampton vs Ipswich and Wrexham Vs Southampton needed to be rescheduled due to the Saints’ FA Cup game, Wrexham have been given the 7th April matchday, while Ipswich will now face the Saints on 29th April.
All in all, destiny has been kind enough to Wrexham by giving them the best possible tie and occasion to beat Southampton. Now, it’s up to the Reds to end the Saints’ playoff hopes and avenge their earlier-season defeat.
