Wrexham fans react to James McClean’s January exit to re-join boyhood club Derry City in a surprise move out of nowhere.
The past weekend was a rollercoaster of emotions for Wrexham fans. Academy product Max Cleworth finalising his contract extension sent a wave of happiness among the Reds fanbase. However, James McClean waving a sudden goodbye and an unexpected 2-1 Norwich City defeat ruined the mood.
Still, Wrexham have 19 more league matches to push upwards into the playoffs spots. Most of the upcoming matchdays are spaced with a week’s gap for preparation, except the current one. A home date against unexpectedly struggling Leicester City is followed by an away trip to QPR.
Meaning the Reds have very little time to sit back and properly soak in the Norwich City defeat. From the fans perspective, their minds are still very much occupied by James McClean’s Derry City return instead of getting excited for 2 Wrexham games in the next five days.
From congratulatory messages on his sudden transfer to banters, the Wrexham fanbase is doing their fest to give McClean a grand online farewell.
Wrexham fans react to James McClean’s January exit
A player’s homecoming is often celebrated among every club and their fans whom he represented. James McClean is no different, with the Wrexham faithful wishing him well on the decision to trace back to his Derry City roots.
One fan said on X(formerly Twitter), “Great way to wind down a fantastic career at the place it all started.”

Since leaving Derry City early on his career, McClean has lined up for a host of clubs in the English football pyramid such as Sunderland, Wigan Athletic, West Brom and Stoke City before wearing the Red of Wrexham. Hence, McClean’s full circle return to join Derry City is getting widely appreciated by all of these fanbases.
Another fan threw a light-hearted banter saying: “Has the whole of England rattled.”
Hailing from Ireland, it’s no surprise that James McClean’s hate for Rangers and England in general stretches beyond the pitch. Add his outspoken leader’s traits and showing extreme passion during matches, McClean often gets booed in various English stadiums.
A very recent example came in the aftermath of Wrexham’s 2-1 Swansea City defeat. There, the FA punished McClean with a 3-game suspension for getting too aggressive on the opponent’s winger, Ronald, in the heat of the moment. That decision was also celebrated with joy and taunts among Swansea fans and Wrexham’s old League 1 and League 2 rivals.

On the flip side, Irish fans and those of Scottish giants Celtic never shy away from displaying their unwavering support to McClean. One of them even issued a rallying cry to the Hoops for hijacking McClean’s transfer.
He said: “@CelticFC hijack this move. At all costs.”
That call probably came too late, after all, McClean had jetted off to Derry City to sign his contract till then. At the age of 37, it’s much likely that he will consider hanging up his boots at Derry City itself. Hence, Celtic fans shouldn’t get their hopes up to see the beloved Irish legend playing for the green side of Glasgow.
Anyways, the entire Wrexham fanbase and James McClean supporters are sure to keep up with the wide midfielder’s every upcoming Derry City game from now on. The reason being that McClean might retire in a season or two, so let’s enjoy the final years of his football while we can.
