Wrexham fans react to Andy Cannon joining Burton Albion on loan from Wrexham in the January transfer window.

Wrexham are off to a flying start this week, in terms of January player exits. It was expected that upto 7 players could be on the move from the Reds camp in the final week of the transfer window, and it’s panning out the same way. Firstly, Wrexham fan favourite Andy Cannon sealed a January loan to Burton Albion on Monday.

Then, Conor Coady’s Charlton Athletic loan followed on Tuesday night. It’s plain as day that Wrexham fans will feel good riddance on Coady’s temporary departure. However, watching Cannon play away from Wrexham was always going to ache fans, who have made their true feelings known about the move.

Andy Cannon was nicknamed the “Lion King” by a vast majority of Wrexham supporters. Hence, it was a common sight to see Red Dragons faithfuls showering Lion emojis in numbers upon hearing about his Burton Albion switch.

One fan wrote: “So disappointed to see this, was looking forward to seeing him play.”

Merely 4 weeks ago, Wrexham were preparing for their New Year’s Championship clash away to Blackburn Rovers. A day before the fixture, the Reds announced Andy Cannon’s return to match fitness among other player comebacks. Hopes were high to see Cannon catch up with a few minutes of action in that busy stretch of games, but unfortunately Cannon was always left unused on the sidelines.

Quite possible that Wrexham were looking for winter moves for the 29-year-old midfielder back then, and didn’t want injuries to spoil those plans. After all, his contract situation is pretty delicate barring any unexpected changes. Fans are aware of this fact, with one fan noting: “This is probably the end of Andy Cannon on Wrexham, contract ends in June.”

As a glimmer of hope, Cannon and Wrexham can trigger a fresh one year extension. But then, does Phil Parkinson and the board members rate Cannon that highly to survive in the Championship, or the Premier League if the club gets promoted again in May. At the moment, the answer is a plain No.

Elsewhere, there are feeder club chants made for Burton Albion. After all, they have developed a habit of bagging plenty of former Wrexham players since 2025 started. In the past year alone, Burton Albion have signed Anthony Forde, George Evans, Seb Revan and James Jones from the Reds.

Some of them left for free while the rest walked away for a fresh challenge just months before their Wrexham contract was about to end. One Wrexham fan even hailed Andy Cannon as the best player Burton Albion have picked from the Racecourse.

He said: “For all the players burton have took from us (& they aren’t shy in doing so) ac best capture imo, if he gets Mins/get back to best – they’ve got one hell of a player at disposal, good luck.”

As of now, Burton Albion are adamant to keep League Two demotion fears at an arm’s length. Despite giving a tough contest to Bolton Wanderers in away surroundings, Burton succumbed to a last-minute 2-1 defeat yesterday.

This struggling phase is enough to describe why Burton Albion need Andy Cannon so much. Wrexham fans can estimate that Cannon would walk straight into the Burton lineup, and the hope remains that Cannon doesn’t add a relegation mark on his impressive playing career following 3 successive promotions with Wrexham.
