Wrexham want more Josh Windass than Nathan Broadhead transfers in January

Josh Windass

Wrexham have adopted a unique January transfer strategy. The Red Dragons want more Josh Windass than Nathan Broadhead transfers in January.

Wrexham invested nearly £10m for a fresh attacking unit ahead of their Championship return in May. They included the signings of Josh Windass, Kieffer Moore and Nathan Broadhead. All of them have struck a brilliant scoring chemistry up top, still, 33 year old striker Kieffer Moore was the only short-term recruitment among the trio.

For that reason, Wrexham can’t rely much on Moore’s shoulders nor on the strategy to snap up ageing forwards for a bargain. Hoping that they bring a ton of goals for a good season or two.

Instead, going down the Josh Windass or Nathan Broadhead transfer route is more sustainable for the Reds. That way, the club can place a strong foothold on the Premier League by the end of this decade, if everything else goes to plan.

Needless to say, the Premier League funds are enormous for making any dream signing possible. But they only start kicking in the case of promotion. Even in the best case promotion scenario, there is this January transfer window before it.

Wrexham’s patient January transfer strategy

And for now, Wrexham’s transfer strategy is plain and clear. According to a Leader Live report, the Reds aren’t actively looking for any transfer targets but won’t hold back their wallets in the case of a golden market opportunity.

In other words, Wrexham intend for more signings in the mould of Josh Windass, meaning players who can add a fair bit of quality or depth, or both into the current camp. Plus, an important thing to note is that their price tag stays minimal.

Hence, Wrexham are set to keep tabs on a few exciting loan options and free transfers in the next fifteen days. Getting Patrick Bamford’s signature emerged as one such shrewd deal again in January.

Only until Sheffield United blocked any possibility of Bamford leaving the Blades mid season, let alone come to Wrexham to provide attacking cover for the present and future.

Championship clubs have exploited this strategy to claim promotion

In the preceding 3 years, Luton Town, Southampton and Sunderland have gained Premier League promotion thanks to winning the playoffs. The same route that Wrexham fans see the club competing for, and it’s no surprise that all those 3 clubs have played it super smart in January while making additions.

Starting from Sunderland, they had talented number 9 Wilson Isidor on loan twelve months ago. In six months, they saw Isidor’s impact in their promotion cause and immediately rubber stamped his signature for a reported fee of over £3m.

Moreover, the Black Cats rolled up another master trick by bagging Roma midfielder Enzo Le Fee on their books. Wrexham fans can imagine, how much of a statement signing Sunderland pulled last January. The best part? They grabbed him on a loan, an absolutely risk-free move that later paid off.

Coming to Southampton, they widened the attacking talent available to them with David Brooks and Joe Rothwell’s winter loans. The wide midfielder and box-to-box midfield pair clocked up vital goals and assists for the Saints that lead them to a swift Premier League comeback at the first time of asking.

Luton Town were no different, they onboarded the likes of promising fullback Cody Drameh and midfielder Marvelous Nakamba during 2023 January. The duo understood the playoffs assignment well, and quickly established themselves as integral parts of a Luton Town unit that marched their way to the Premier League in no time.
