Wrexham player ratings vs Ipswich Town: 8/10 duo and Josh Windass stood out

Wrexham player ratings

Wrexham player ratings vs Ipswich Town from the 1-0 FA Cup 4th round win. An 8/10 duo and Josh Windass stood out for Phil Parkinson’s men.

Wrexham’s 1-0 FA Cup win over Ipswich Town hasn’t gathered the level of attention that January’s Nottingham Forest win got. Perhaps it might be due to the Reds finishing the job within the regulated 90 minutes. Another reason might be that apart from Mansfield Town beating Burnley, there have been no FA Cup upsets in the current 4th round.

Still, that doesn’t change the fact that Wrexham left the tie wide open in the second half when they should have crushed the visitors beneath the 1-0 lead. After a dominating first half, Phil Parkinson’s men had a hard time dealing with Ipswich Town’s dangerous crosses in the box.

Then up stepped the Wrexham backline, and somehow the home side preserved a clean sheet against a top 3 Championship team. The midfield and attack were also tactically sound going forward and credit must be given to them as well.

On that note, below are the Wrexham player ratings of every starter on a scale of 10 who played their part in capping off the 1-0 FA Cup win over Ipswich Town.

Wrexham player ratings vs Ipswich Town

GK: Arthur Okonkwo – 7

Okonkwo released a brilliant forward pass to Josh Windass that resulted in an early scoring opportunity. Denied an Ipswich Town cross in the second half, and was properly backed by the centre-backs.

CB: Callum Doyle – 6

Doyle stayed within the Wrexham half for almost the entire game. Went down to block an Ipswich Town corner chance in the second half and was always alert inside the Reds box.

CB: Dominic Hyam – 7

Hyam attempted a few rushed clearances whenever Wrexham were in danger of conceding an equaliser. Overall, he didn’t put a foot wrong against Ipswich Town unlike his slip last weekend on Millwall’s 2-0 goal.

CB: Max Cleworth – 8

Max Cleworth was the best Wrexham defender on the pitch. Prevented George Hirst from going 1v1 against Arthur Okonkwo with a last-ditched tackle in the first half.

Then, Cleworth again blocked an Ipswich Town shot inside the penalty area. If not for these 2 brave efforts, Wrexham may have floundered the lead again in the FA Cup.

LWB: George Thomason – 7

George Thomason played a couple of quick exchange passes with Rathbone and O’Brien in the build up of Josh Windass goal. Kept finding Rathbone and Windass unmarked near the Ipswich Town box and also crowded the box while defending corners.

CM: George Dobson – 6

Dobson was comfortable with the ball while passing in tight spaces. Never panicked in front of the Ipswich Town midfield and combined well with Lewis O’Brien to drive the ball forward.

CM: Lewis O’Brien – 8

Top game from Lewis O’Brien in the middle of the park. He has had a good few weeks in an advanced midfielder role, and helped Wrexham transition smoothly from defence to attack in the 1-0 FA Cup win.

He kept taking the short corners with Josh Windass and many times, set him or Ollie Rathbone to go for goal from distance.

RWB: Ryan Longman – 7

Most Wrexham fans treat Ryan Longman as an average wingback in comparison to Issa Kabore. That’s not true. When it comes to finding the right passes and launching pinpoint crosses, Longman is far more efficient than Kabore.

He got the assist for Josh Windass 1-0 opener, and may get to compete with Kabore for a starting spot with these kind of performances.

CAM: Ollie Rathbone – 7

Rathbone nearly made it 2-0 in the first half with a brilliant top-corner effort but the Ipswich keeper was equal to it. Every now and then, he kept popping up with a shot at the visitors goal all night.

CAM: Josh Windass – 9

Showed his pressing skills from the get go, and nearly got a first goal within two minutes but his finishing wasn’t up to the mark. Half an hour later, met a Ryan Longman cross and fired it past the keeper for the game’s only goal.

Was more involved in creating chances than usual. Overall, Josh Windass was Wrexham’s best player of the evening.

ST: Sam Smith – 7

Josh Windass mistimed shot fell to Sam Smith but even he couldn’t poke it home. Didn’t got any clear-cut chances since then, but operated as a decent box presence in the Ipswich Town goal.
