Wrexham proved right for rejecting Sammie Szmodics loan transfer from Ipswich Town during the January transfer window.
Despite presented with the chance, Wrexham said no to multiple star strikers in the final days of the January transfer window. £19m Sidiki Cherif went to Fenerbahce, proven Championship striker Adam Armstrong headed to Wolves and the reason for letting them slip was simple. Huge transfer fees.
Wrexham had done enough fancy shopping in the summer transfer window that left no reason for them to splash big in January again. Bagging former Championship Golden Boot Sammie Szmodics on a loan was a fairly decent option though.
Still, Wrexham rejected the move and picked up Davis Keillor-Dunn and Bailey Cadamarteri later. For them, the jury will be out later. But hindsight suggests Wrexham were right to reject Sammie Szmodics loan transfer.

The 30-year-old Ipswich Town striker instead moved to Wrexham’s closest rivals Derby County on loan. Szmodics got to linkup with boss John Eustace again, under whom the Irishman recorded that 27 goal Championship season.

As expected, Szmodics Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna was glad to see the back of him in January. However, McKenna’s admission suggests Wrexham dodged a bullet by not attempting a Szmodics loan deal.
In his own words, the East Anglian Daily Times quoted McKenna saying: “But in the end it wasn’t a football decision, it wasn’t related to his football performance. It was a decision that was made in the best interests of our group dynamic, of our dressing room culture, of the values of our dressing room and of our team.”
These Szmodics comments are tell-tale signs that there’s a huge issue with the striker’s dressing room attitude. Having a player who falls out with the group only harms the team’s performance no matter how talented the player is.
In Wrexham’s case, the Reds promotion would be thrown in danger had Szmodics been involved in a dressing room standoff.
Keillor-Dunn and Cadamarteri won’t cause dressing room problems
Clearly, the Sammie Szmodics transfer was a bigger risk as compared to the attacking improvement it offered. Does that mean Davis Keillor-Dunn and Bailey Cadamarteri won’t run into any dressing room problems?
It’s difficult to predict the future. However, their profiles suggest they will comfortably integrate into the squad without giving much headache to boss Phil Parkinson. Davis Keillor-Dunn is a former Wrexham player and knows the values and culture of the club.

He was a part of the Reds non-league setup. Joining forces with Wrexham at Championship level is both a proud moment as well as a chance to shine here at the second time of asking. Keillor-Dunn’s willingness to contribute to Wrexham’s attack can be understood by the fact that he turned down multiple Championship offers to return home.
Had the 28-year-old only thought of himself, he would have preferred bagging a starting role at other interested second-tier clubs. Moving to Bailey Cadamarteri, he is an emerging striker at the end of the day. Even without Wrexham’s massive striker competition, Cadamarteri would have stayed content with a reduced role until atleast the remainder of the 2025/26 season.
From next season, Cadamarteri will be expected to strive for a second choice striker’s role. So, the problem of whether the Jamaican international is happy or not with less playing time despite performing good doesn’t come up in the immediate future.
And it’s worth noting that young players are easy to manage than asking a regular starter to accept a bench role. Both ways, Wrexham fans can almost take it for granted that Keillor-Dunn and Cadamarteri won’t ruin the atmosphere within the squad.
