‘Leading’ – Wrexham pursue 23-year-old two-time Championship promotion winner

Wrexham pursue 2-time Championship promotion winner

Wrexham are one of the clubs interested in signing 23-year-old Brighton and Hove Albion loanee Jeremy Sarmiento.

Within a week, Wrexham has seen a couple of renewals with centre-back Cleworth & midfielder Matty James securing their futures. That leaves only the attacking department spared, with no winter announcements whatsoever.

Despite being rumoured with multiple targets, Wrexham is yet to go all-in on any one and secure the deal. While a version of this story says about their new transfer strategy, there’s a tactical reasoning behind it as well.

A look at Wrexham’s current roster hints at a subtle disconnect from the 3-4-3 system Phil Parkinson prefers. While the formation involves attacking contributions from both ends, they haven’t mastered this well.

There’s hardly any denying that Josh Windass(on the right wing) has been underwhelming in recent games. Factor this with Broadhead being the only reliable option on the left, and Wrexham’s attack force feels the need for a winger rather than splashing funds on another centre-forward.

Here’s where the club’s latest transfer links help as Wrexham chase down an exciting Top Flight winger. As per Transfer correspondent Alex Crook, it’s Jeremy Sarmiento, who’s emerged as a target for multiple Championship clubs, including Wrexham.

Alex Crook confirmed the update, quoting: “Birmingham seem to be leading the race to sign #BHAFC winger Jeremy Sarmiento. Also interest from Wrexham and Boro. Likely to be a permanent deal.”

Sarmiento’s last spells make him a must-pursue Wrexham target

Evidently, Wrexham are not the current front-runners in Brighton & Hove Albion winger Sarmiento’s deal. While losing them to their promotion rivals comes as an absolute disadvantage, there are multiple upsides to why Wrexham ought to push for the 23-year-old’s signature.

Although Sarmiento’s ongoing Serie A spell has been far from exceptional, his Top Flight pedigree speaks to his talent. An exciting winger who excels in dribbling and vertical play, Sarmiento’s signing could add the South American flair to Wrexham’s attack force.

Previously touted to go for Matheus Pereira, Sarmiento could be an upgrade for Wrexham for the versatility he provides. Having operated on both left and right flanks, his awareness of the attacking midfield role can cater for multiple positions in case of a key injury at Wrexham.

Factor this in with his previous successful Championship spells. Being on loan in the 23/24 and 24/25 campaigns, Sarmiento achieved promotions with two different sides in Ipswich and Burnley.

Having contributed 3 goals and 2 assists while joining in January, Sarmiento was key in the super-sub role for Ipswich’s promotion. Though the winger’s final output reduced in the 24/25 loan spell with Burnley, he still managed 4 goals in the season as a backup.

Wrexham’s experience with PL targets hints at a successful spell

Finding a Premier League loanee up for grabs in the Championship is always an exciting deal. Let alone for Wrexham, who’ve struck gold with Top Flight players multiple times over the years.

Be it Issa Kabore, Lewis O’Brien, Arthur Okonkwo or Callum Doyle, the Dragons have had negligible flops while striking a deal with PL clubs. Combine this with Sarmiento’s familiarity with the Wrexham attack, and he could be the next jackpot signing.

Interestingly, the 23-year-old shared the dugout with Wrexham stars Nathan Broadhead and Kieffer Moore in his Ipswich spell. Reuniting Sarmiento with the duo, especially when he’s supposed to be the backup for Broadhead again, makes sense this way.

Already having achieved back-to-back promotion medals in last season’s, Sarmiento’s good luck charm can see him complete the hat-trick at Wrexham. But it all begins with a move, and if the Dragons win his transfer race against Birmingham.
