Wrexham need to realise scary Coventry City truth regarding the Championship promotion playoffs in May. It’s not what Wrexham fans thought all along.
From the very first Championship match day, Frank Lampard’s Coventry City had cemented their place as the undisputed league leaders. For over two-thirds of the league season, Coventry sat atop without facing much competition from teams placed at second and third. Many Wrexham fans may also have labelled them as a Premier League-bound club long ago.
Back in October, the Reds pipped them 3-2 at the Racecourse and became the first second-tier side to win against Coventry. For that reason, that Kieffer Moore’s hat-trick was celebrated as a Wrexham miracle among the fanbase. Little did anybody knew that beating Coventry City would not hold the same weight three months later.
Coventry City’s recent Championship form
Those Wrexham fans who wrote-off the Championship title race for Coventry, their claim isn’t ageing well. Since December, the Sky Blues have tasted five Championship defeats. Frank Lampard’s men won and drew 4 games apiece, and their recent act was a 0-0 stalemate against relegation contenders Oxford United.
That amounts to an awful total of 16 points from their past 13 league outings. For a playoffs aiming outfit, this terrible performance sets them below the top 10 entirely. Coventry City’s lead also started vanishing at the top.

Yesterday, long-standing second place rivals Middlesbrough leapfrogged Coventry City to grab hold of the first place with 61 points. Fans often say the Championship is unpredictable, and how about this Coventry City downfall? Wrexham fans, there might be more to it.
The Sky Blues are in action against Middlesbrough at home on the same 17th February evening when Wrexham take on Bristol City. Going by their current shape, it’s hard to imagine a Coventry City win coming up. Meaning, more of Coventry’s Championship decline is around the corner.
Wrexham need to realise scary Coventry City truth
At the moment, Wrexham and Coventry City are separated by 12 points. The Reds are clearly far off from dreaming of overtaking Coventry which fans will also agree. After all, the Sky Blues will be expected to find form again and not let the direct promotion chance slip away.
However, it’s worth noting that Ipswich Town are also merely 5 points behind Coventry City. Should the latter keep stumbling for a while, and Kieran McKenna’s side string an unbeaten run then Coventry City will be left reeling at third place. Playoffs will be the only option for them, and that’s where it gets scary for Wrexham.

Phil Parkinson’s men have been impressive in the past ten matches, no doubt. But still, Wrexham appear more likely to end up at sixth should they gain a playoffs spot. In the Championship playoffs, it’s 3rd vs 6th placed teams alongside 4th vs 5th placed ones.
Connecting the dots, Wrexham vs Coventry City is a strong possibility for the two-legged playoffs semi-final. On a side note, Wrexham have an away game scheduled against Coventry City in the second last Championship matchday.
After that, the regular season ends with a Middlesbrough clash. Afterwards, it’s possibly Coventry City again for Phil Parkinson’s Reds. The promotion task got even more harder for Wrexham in the playoffs scheme of things.
Despite not playing at their level best, Coventry City are a tough nut to crack this time around. If they found their momentum back just in time for a potential Wrexham playoffs semi-final, then it could be two long 90 minute evenings for Reds fans.
