Concerning Wrexham Championship stat says the club has lost the most (18) points in the from winning positions in this first half of the 2025/26 season.
Thoughts on the Swansea game, Lads? Ask me, and it was another ‘W’ we kindly left on the table for the opposition. And credit to it, even now, the winless streak in December continues.
Now, the whole 5-game miserable run aches, but every Red Dragons fan would admit the last 2 results demand a rigorous review.
Be it the Watford tie or a shame in the Welsh Derby, Wrexham had a chance to bury the game after an early lead. Yet, not only did the side fail this mission, but they ended up losing points from both scenarios.
Well, a slip, or even two, in Championship’s cut-throat competition isn’t strange. But the issue arises when one realises this has been Wrexham’s story ever since the season opener against Southampton.
Seriously, how have rival fans not started the ‘you-were-winning-when-I-left’ chant for Wrexham? Because a defeat against Swansea has now put Wrexham at the top of the Championship tally in one of the most embarrassing stats.
Recently, @RobRyanRed took to X(formerly Twitter), to quote this, “No team in the Championship has dropped more points from winning positions than Wrexham (18) this season.”
Wrexham’s abysmally poor record when leading
A look at this alarming “18-point” figure is enough to say everything about Wrexham’s defensive frailities. To say that most of them have been the result of late concessions raises questions.
Think about it: Even if not for all of them, securing a share of those points. While a podium spot will be an overstatement, Wrexham could’ve easily been among the playoff contenders, to say the least.
Alas! Wrexham’s reality is that they rank among the worst when it comes to materialising a lead into a positive result. According to Transfermarkt records, the club has just closed 6 wins, while losing points(in a draw or defeat) 8 times.
Notably, the instances include an opening defeat against Southampton, a home draw against Sheffield Wednesday, a 1-1 draw against Derby and Birmingham at home, an all 1-1 result against Leicester and Middlesbrough, a 2-2 draw against Watford last week and a defeat against Swansea yesterday.
Well, this brings us to the million-dollar question: Who’s responsible for all this? Call me biased, but reading through the textbook responsibilities of a manager, the mantle falls on Phil Parkinson. Especially, on an issue so recurring and hard to ignore now.
What should Wrexham change ahead?
Definitely, for a side that’s won promotions back-to-back-to-back under a single manager, it comes naturally challenging to change it all in an instant. And if the owners trust in a boss’s vision this much, the complexity increases.
Still, the discussion lies in a bigger interest of Wrexham’s welfare, and the idea of a radical change mustn’t be straightaway neglected.
Agreed, the last few years have been a fairytale with Phil Parkinson steering Wrexham to all-time highs. But, maybe, the side has hit its ceiling with Parky, who’s been clueless all this Championship season.
No way, gifting away 18 points within the 1st half of the season is a petty mistake, and while respect to Parkinson’s legacy, it feels time for him to handover the baton to someone else.
Don’t get me wrong, as a Dragons fan, giving up on Parky would be a hard choice. Yet, the need of the moment calls for a more competitively tailored boss to lead Wrexham to success in the Championship and the Premier League.
Undoubtedly, the Welsh derby defeat has opinions swirling on Parkinson’s future at Wrexham. Time to see if the Hollywood owners back the boss one more time, or opt for a change.
