Wrexham AFC is reportedly close to making their inaugural January signing of Bristol City defender Zak Vyner.
Wrexham have spent the biggest chunk of their January window on the attacking department. The club’s recent developments for Sammie Szmodics and Ryan Hardie’s transfer just complement the club’s plan.
While it suggested that a forward will unlock Wrexham’s signing business, it turns out the Reds’ behind-the-scenes plan is different. Against expectations, Wrexham are inching closer to welcoming a CB as the inaugural winter signing.
Wrexham’s inaugural January signing is almost done
According to Sportsboom, the player in question is Bristol City hero Zak. Vyner. Having decided to make a move instead of renewing his club contract, the 28-year-old could be heading to Wrexham soon.
Sportsboom quoted the update, saying: “Wrexham are closing in on the signing of Zak Vyner. The Bristol City defender has rejected a contract extension, turned down interest from Birmingham City, and is now set on a move to Wales.”
This update ought to come as music to Wrexham faithful’s ears. While Vyner’s signing brings the Reds’ January drought to an end, the club will appreciate the player’s decision to choose them over Birmingham City.
Wrexham’s transfer window so far has been a story of lost battles. With the club ending second to Boro in Sarmiento’s race, Adam Armstrong’s update could’ve made it a double defeat. In this aspect, the Zak Vyner link is crucial for how it shows his trust in Wrexham’s ambitious PL project.
Zak Vyner’s Bristol City track record
For the record, Zak Vyner has registered the most Championship appearances for Bristol City ever. Having made the record his own in October 2025, Vyner has featured in 229 second division games for the Robins.
Ever since his youth days, Vyner has been a part of Bristol City’s framework. With his prominence increasing over the years, the centre-back has been an ever-present name in Bristol’s backline for quite some time now.

Having played nearly every minute for Bristol in the league in the last couple of years, his record is a testament to his dedication and fitness.
Undeniably, Bristol City’s prolonged wait of 11 years for PL promotion has played a part in Vyner’s record appearances. At the same time, a seemingly endless stay is what fuels his desire to switch to a burgeoning project like Wrexham, as he denies a Bristol renewal.
Either way, the bottomline is that Wrexham can grab a quality defender like Vyner at the cost of peanuts. With his Bristol contract expiring in the summer, the Robins’ hands are tied to stop him from moving for cheap.
Vyner can play a huge part in Wrexham’s promotion
Wrexham has been blessed to employ a backline consisting of 3 solid starters in Dom Hyam, Max Cleworth and Callum Doyle. With all of them starting, the Reds’ fort seems safe and secure to the maximum extent possible.
However, Phil Parkinson’s rotation plan has exposed the defence’s critical issue time and again. With Dan Scarr not neck to neck on level with these 3 CB’s, the overall defensive output crumbles, and situations like the QPR game develop.
Here’s where Zak Vyner’s signing fills in as the perfect solution needed for Wrexham. Having been a consistent starter for multiple years, Vyner can fill in a defensive slot whenever needed.
Additionally, Zak can accept a slightly reduced role for his willingness and admiration of Wrexham’s project. That way, the 28-year-old turns out to be the signing the Reds didn’t know they needed.
Given his professionalism and leadership skills, Zak Vyner can turn out to be a leader figure at Wrexham soon. Considering Vyner comes in the squad for Conor Coady after the latter’s loan exit, fans would take the upgrade every day.
