Wrexham transfer target Yan Valery leaves Championship rivals Sheffield Wednesday on loan to join Swiss top-flight outfit Young Boys.
Across the 2025/26 season, Wrexham has raided last-placed Championship rivals Sheffield Wednesday for two top talents. The Reds swooped in for Owls forward Josh Windass on a free transfer in the summer transfer window.
During the winter market, the club coughed up a £1m transfer fee for adding Bailey Cadamarteri to their attacking ranks. A third Sheffield Wednesday to Wrexham transfer wasn’t far from happening either. Owls fullback Yan Valery was highly rated by the Wrexham hierarchy but for some reason or the other, they couldn’t work out a deal for him.
Worst enough, Phil Parkinson’s men couldn’t even land a new right-back in January which they wanted all along. On multiple occasions, the Reds have brought in the transfer targets they missed signing in the previous transfer windows.
New centre-back Zak Vyner is a good example. However, that won’t be the story with Wrexham’s pursuit of Yan Valery.
Yan Valery leaves Sheffield Wednesday on loan
Almost a week has passed since the Championship transfer window slammed shut. However, winner transfer markets are still open abroad and that’s how Yan Valery’s transfer is expected to play out.
In his own words, journalist Alex Miller said: “Understand Yan Valery is set to leave Wednesday on loan – not expecting to see him at Swansea. Gather Swiss side Young Boys have made offer to take the Tunisia int to season end. Owls set to accept after talks with player.”

Without being biased, Europa League outfit Young Boys are a bigger club than Wrexham at this stage. Despite missing out on a Wrexham reunion with Josh Windass and Bailey Cadamarteri, Yan Valery won’t lose sleep all thanks to earning an even better transfer move.
Unfortunately, playing in European club competitions won’t be possible for Valery this season as Young Boys have been dumped out of the Europa League group stages. The Swiss Cup has also slipped away. Yet, there is a good chance for Valery to challenge for the top 4 places with Young Boys and gain a pathway into next year’s European club competitions.
Wrexham will regret not signing Yan Valery
To begin with, Valery isn’t departing Sheffield Wednesday for Young Boys on a permanent basis just yet. So, there is room for Wrexham to be optimistic about his signing during the summer, but the ball is not in the Reds court.
Plus, the best part with Valery’s transfer was that the Owls would have accepted any bid just over £1m. For a 26-year-old international starter with bags of Premier League experience, that transfer fee is a win-win deal. Hence, will Wrexham regret not signing Yan Valery in the near future?

Sadly, yes. Yesterday, the home fans saw Wrexham being reduced to only George Thomason in the left wingback role following Liberato Cacace’s injury. Depth is already threadbare at Wrexham on both left wingback and right wingback positions.
Thus, an Issa Kabore’s injury will be the last thing any fan would want. At Millwall, the Burkina Faso starter saw much of the ball at his feet, no doubt. But his distribution in the final third felt quite predictable. Everytime Kabore got space on the right, he would immediately swing in a cross hoping Kieffer Moore gets the final action right even once.
The Millwall defence probably came prepared for that. They locked down Moore inside the box, sending Wrexham’s attacking plan out of the window. There was no Nathan Broadhead as well, meaning Phil Parkinson’s men just played into the Lions strength and let them dictate the second half.
With Yan Valery, the Reds could have looked for more attacking outlets rather than just cross and hope for the best. And the Young Boys-bound defender has better defensive traits than Kabore. With that, Wrexham’s backline wouldn’t look entirely opened up after half-time in the 2-0 Millwall defeat.
