Charlton Athletic fans are willing to pass the buy option for £2m Wrexham ace Conor Coady, whom they signed in January on loan.
Counting from today, only 5 weeks are left in Wrexham’s Championship campaign. Beyond that the Reds will have some big decisions to make for the 2026 summer transfer window. A bunch of signings can be expected at the Racecourse as usual.
That will lead to a flurry of ongoings from the current Wrexham squad, but it’s not the complete picture. The reason being that Wrexham has to resolve the futures of many loaned players as well.
Players like Paul Mullin and Elliot Lee are still owned by the Reds. The only upside is that they don’t have many years remaining on their contract, and a League One or League Two club will probably contact Wrexham for their services before the Reds begin their club hunt.
Regarding other loanees like Ryan Hardie and Conor Coady, it might be a long summer for Wrexham. Both Hardie and Coady were brought for significant transfer fees totalling around £3m. Neither of them has justified that amount, let alone proved to be a good fit in Phil Parkinson’s system.

As such, the only way out for Wrexham is to offload them at the best opportunity they can get.
Charlton Athletic fans don’t want Conor Coady
Signed for £2m, Conor Coady was the most expensive signing out of him and Ryan Hardie. Soon enough he became the most expensive Wrexham flop in recent memory. He was sent to Charlton Athletic on loan nearly two months ago to the delight of many Charlton Athletic fans.
That optimism fueled beliefs of Coady starring for the Londoners and Wrexham finally being able to get the Englishman off their hands. Well, Coady has done a steady job at Charlton in an unusual holding midfield role. But that doesn’t concern Wrexham.
The bottom line is the Reds want Coady out, no matter how. Unfortunately, this task doesn’t look easy as Charlton Athletic fans are more inclined to pass the buy option from the Coady loan deal.

In his own words, Football League World quoted Charlton Athletic fan pundit Chris Woodward: “Despite his positive performances in a Charlton shirt, I’d be avoiding Coady this summer. He’s added real leadership, experience and fight when we found ourselves in the relegation scrap, but I don’t think he’s the type of player we should be looking at if we want to progress as a club.”
What should Wrexham do with Conor Coady?
No Wrexham fan will deny that Conor Coady was a Premier League star and an England international in his prime. But that phase has already gone 4-5 years ago. Now, Coady can’t get into a top Championship side as a starter forget being a Premier League material.
Regardless of whether Phil Parkinson’s men climb to the Premier League or not, Coady should be moved on. Every year, 3 promoted clubs come to the Championship and some of them can afford to pay around a million for the experienced Conor Coady.
He can help that club avoid a relegation fight in return. Totally, a win-win situation. Other option could be to lend Coady on loan to a mid-table Championship club with a mandatory buy clause should they reach the playoffs.
Whether Wrexham decide to offload Coady immediately or hold on for better terms, the Reds must finalise his exit well within the early months of the window.
