‘Want to play’ – Wrexham midfielder doesn’t blame Championship schedule for tough run-in

Wrexham midfielder George Dobson accepts the challenging run-in by anticipating an exciting month of Championship action ahead.

It’s no secret that Wrexham arguably have the toughest run‑in left in the Championship. After facing sides like Southampton and Birmingham, the Reds will still have to take on automatic promotion contenders Coventry and Middlesbrough.

If Wrexham secure a playoff spot, they would likely need to beat two of the other three sides to go up. It’s a daunting run-in that could go down as one of the most challenging run‑ins to the Premier League in Championship history.

One way for Wrexham to look at this schedule is to feel they’ve been disadvantaged by the EFL schedulers. But the Reds aren’t blaming anyone, and George Dobson has wholeheartedly accepted the challenge on behalf of the team.

As quoted by the BBC, Dobson said: “These are the games that you want to play and we’re obviously competing to get into the best league in the world.”

George Dobson further added: “There’s a really good feel in the dressing room and a real excitement towards the last month of the season because there’s still so much to play for.”

Dobson’s excitement for the final stretch of the season is apt

The final few weeks haven’t been the best for George Dobson personally or for Wrexham collectively. While the Reds were able to end the March schedule with a comeback win over Sheffield United, it was far from a dominant display that many might’ve hoped for.

The victory at Bramall Lane saw Dobson return from his three‑game suspension, but the midfielder is unlikely to be entirely satisfied with his own performance.

Despite the win, Dobson ended with one of the lowest match ratings in the team. A fair share of that came from a reckless yellow‑card challenge on Patrick Bamford in the 56th minute.

It’s worth noting that Dobson’s booking came minutes after Josh Windass had levelled the score for Wrexham. With the game standing at a crucial juncture, Dobson’s foul could have easily swung the momentum back the other way.

While Wrexham ended up as the better side eventually, Dobson didn’t have his best evening at Bramall Lane.

However, that remains a thing of the past now. Given that George Dobson has had a two-week-long rest in the International break, the defensive midfielder will begin the final stretch of the season in sheer excitement.

While that explains his excitement, Wrexham also have a crucial factor in their favour to be eager to continue their playoff charge.

Wrexham are incredibly lucky in one aspect for playoff charge

There’s no doubt Wrexham have previously missed chances to leapfrog the 5th‑placed side and boost their playoff hopes. Perhaps those narrow misses are what have kept them out of the playoff zone.

But Wrexham remain one of only two sides whose promotion charge is in their own hands. Unlike playoff hopefuls like Derby or Watford, the Reds’ superior form should see them into the top six.

The best aspect of this advantage is that they possess an opportunity to leapfrog 6th-place Southampton. While Wrexham Vs Southampton have long been touted as a playoff decider, the mighty clash is just around the corner.

A win would not only push Wrexham back into the playoff zone but could also all but end Southampton’s hopes. That’s where the timely injury update of Ben Sheaf, Kieffer Moore, and Matty James could prove decisive.

Even if Moore and James can make it for the crucial tie against Southampton, Wrexham’s chances would increase significantly. Factor in that the Reds will be much better rested compared to Southampton, and their prospects get another boost.

Overall, the Wrexham dressing room has every right to look forward to an exciting month ahead. While the Reds hold a unique advantage for promotion, they would need to utilise it fully to maximise their hopes.
