Retired Spanish midfielder makes Wrexham transfer claim for departing Barcelona legend

Former Spanish midfielder Gaizka Mendieta suggests that Wrexham could be an attractive destination for superstar Robert Lewandowski’s after retirement aspirations.

Recently, Wrexham were linked with right wing‑back target Idrissa Touré ahead of the summer window. While that signals the club’s intent to push for promotion next season, there are a couple more positions that need fine‑tuning.

One of the primary concerns was the lack of goals from Wrexham’s forwards towards the end of the campaign. Barring Josh Windass, no other attacker stood out when the Reds needed decisive goals in their playoff quest.

Unsurprisingly, Wrexham could be looking at some exciting attacking options up front. Amid the anticipation, former Spanish midfielder Gaizka Mendieta has made a jaw‑dropping suggestion, linking the Reds with a move for superstar Robert Lewandowski.

Recently, Mendieta discussed Lewandowski’s future after the forward decided to leave Barcelona at the end of the season. During the discussion, he hailed Wrexham as an attractive destination for the striker, citing a combination of reasons.

Speaking to PlayUK, Mendieta mentioned: “Robert Lewandowski said he is open to taking a step down and if he wants to be an actor after he retires, Wrexham is the place to go! He’s looking for the next step. If he wants to continue playing football, he’s obviously got options.”

Mendieta suggests Lewandowski could consider a Wrexham move

Over a football career spanning more than two decades, Robert Lewandowski has established himself as one of the greatest players in history. With over 700 goals and 34 titles to his name, the Polish forward has arguably been the best striker of recent times.

However, age is catching up, and Lewandowski now faces a world of open possibilities after leaving FC Barcelona recently. While multiple European heavyweights like AC Milan and Juventus have shown interest in signing him, Mendieta has made valid points on why a move to Wrexham could appeal to him.

One of the primary incentives that could lure Robert Lewandowski to North Wales is his post‑career plan. The forward has publicly expressed interest in pursuing acting when he hangs up his boots.  If that desire grows, Mendieta suggested that Wrexham could be the place for him.

With club owners Rob and Ryan hailing from Hollywood themselves, they could smoothly aid Lewandowski’s transition into an acting career. The duo have previously helped multiple players begin new ventures after retiring, so paving the way for the Polish legend’s post‑football success could be routine.

In exchange, Wrexham would benefit from Lewandowski’s football qualities, even if it’s for a brief spell. Though he will turn 38 this year, the Polish legend may still have enough to aid a Premier League promotion push. If the move happens, both parties could profit from the deal.

Should Wrexham seriously pursue Robert Lewandowski?

There’s no denying that signing Robert Lewandowski would be a dream move for Wrexham. However, several factors could determine whether the Reds actually push for a deal.

First and foremost, Wrexham already have plentiful attacking options. Despite releasing Jay Rodriguez, they still boast three centre‑forwards: Kieffer Moore, Sam Smith, and Bailey Cadamarteri.

Notably, Cadamarteri has yet to make his first start for Wrexham despite arriving in January. The introduction of a marquee signing like Lewandowski could further complicate how minutes are managed among the many forwards.

Another question is whether Wrexham’s attacking style is even a natural fit for Lewandowski at his age.

Whether it’s Kieffer Moore or Sam Smith, Wrexham have built their attack around agile forwards. Lewandowski, by contrast, is a conventional target man, and questions over his speed and agility would linger.

Beyond that, the Polish striker is already on the radar of several clubs, and Wrexham may struggle to convince him even with strong financial backing, especially with Saudi and MLS interest in the picture. Unless Lewandowski is determined to pursue an acting career after football, a move of this magnitude could be extremely challenging for Wrexham.
