‘Three or four’ – Phil Parkinson doesn’t let West Brom call slip under the radar

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson didn’t let the shocking West Brom penalty call slip under the radar in the aftermath of Wrexham’s 2-2 Championship draw.

Another Championship game, another away day for Wrexham and Wrexham again concede first in the game early on. The same happened in the 3-1 Watford defeat three weeks ago. Then, in the 2-1 comeback win over Sheffield United in March and now, the 2-2 draw at West Brom.

Honestly, Phil Parkinson’s men are becoming more easier to break at the back. Championship teams know Wrexham turn a corner in the second half so they aim to score a few goals before the break to gain crucial points in the league.

Still, that’s not the only problem. The way Wrexham attacked West Brom with several key passes inside the final third, a win was very much on the cards. Infact, the Reds deserved to come out with the 3 points if not for an unfair referee call that favoured West Brom.

Phil Parkinson frustrated over West Brom penalty call

With the game reading 1-0 for West Brom, the Baggies were awarded a routine corner. Just like a typical corner, there was a bit of pulling and pushing inside the box which gets ignored by the ref on many occasions. However, here it didn’t.

Issa Kabore did make contact with West Brom midfielder Jayson Molumby. But it was Molumby instead who simulated falling down and unbalanced Kabore as well in the process. The referee Bobby Madley and the linesman straightaway pointed to the spot.

This theatrical act from Molumby and the subsequent penalty didn’t sit well with Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson. In his own words, BBC quoted a frustrated Parkinson saying: “If you give a penalty for that, you’re giving three or four penalties every game. He’s(Molumby) thrown himself to the floor. Of course, there is contact but it’s only what you see in the penalty box all the time. Very, very harsh decision.”

Wrexham were denied a late penalty for a similar foul

As Parkinson put it, there were 6 corners in favour of Wrexham last night. Accounting for the slightest of contacts during each of them will alone grant Wrexham atleast 3 penalties. Add it to the two goals Josh Windass and George Dobson scored, and the Reds will run out 5-2 winners.

Moreover, Phil Parkinson has every right to get mad at the referee’s lack of consistency during the game. At the 90th minute mark, George Dobson dinked a pass to Kieffer Moore who turned around and got in a 1v1 chance against the West Brom keeper.

The Baggies defenders hurled Moore down who could only release a weak shot on target as a result. But guess what happened? The referee didn’t even care to consult the linesman on this play. To give a minimal foul as a penalty for the opponent and then not give Wrexham a spot kick for the same was pure bias.

Already it’s tough to visit a struggling Championship side in need of points to stay up. Then, a poor first half coupled with an unjustified referee call drags the game away from Wrexham’s reach. All in all, it was quite brave on Wrexham’s part to atleast walk away with a point.

Fortunately, Derby County lost 3-2 on the day to Coventry City and didn’t come close to the Reds in the table. Hopefully, Wrexham beat Southampton next Tuesday and make up for the lost ground in the playoffs race after the 2-2 West Brom result.
