Wrexham tipped to pursue 24-year-old Sunderland’s Premier League promotion-winning captain for a free transfer this summer.
Wrexham’s summer transfer agenda will be heavily influenced by whether they reach the Premier League or not. While some recruitment priorities carry over from the January window, midfield could be an area they look to reinforce this summer.
It’s no secret that a depleted midfield has been one of the primary factors restricting Wrexham from winning back‑to‑back games in over a month. Amid a frantic schedule and multiple injuries, the Reds’ midfield has been particularly sloppy at the start of games.
Here, a transfer suggestion from Football League World saves Wrexham’s challenge of finding a suitable midfield profile. The player in question is Premier League promotion-winning captain, Dan Neil.
Beyond his midfield and leadership qualities, the best part is that Neil is a known face to Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson.
Phil Parkinson previously managed Dan Neil at Sunderland
Phil Parkinson’s managerial spell at Sunderland remains a chapter in his career. While not as successful as his journey with Wrexham, the lessons from that spell paved the way for his applaudable work with the Reds.
It’s worth noting that Parkinson already had Dan Neil at his disposal back in those days. While the Black Cats were competing in League One in 2020, Neil stood out as an up-and-coming name at the club’s youth level.
Though Neil was a regular youth starter, his only senior game time under Parky came in the EFL Trophy in the 2020/21 season. Dan Neil started three group games for Sunderland against Aston Villa U23, Carlisle United and Fleetwood.
Despite not appearing on the scoresheet, Neil handled his midfield duties admirably in the wins over Aston Villa U23 and Carlisle United. However, he didn’t feature again under Parkinson after the manager was relieved of his duties within the following weeks.
Dan Neil’s transfer situation
Neil has emerged as a prominent midfielder over his impressive time in the upper divisions of the EFL. In fact, the 24‑year‑old captained Sunderland to their long‑awaited Premier League return last season.
Dan Neil has been a regular part of Sunderland’s senior setup since the 2021/22 campaign. Having achieved two promotions with the club, Neil has been a mainstay hero for the side in recent years.

However, Sunderland’s decision to look beyond him after reaching the Premier League has put Neil in an unwanted situation. Sidelined from the club’s plans, he opted for a winter loan to Ipswich in search of regular game time.
While he is a starter for promotion favourites Ipswich, Neil is expected to return to Sunderland at the end of the season. With a contract renewal far from discussion, Wrexham could have a brilliant opportunity to bring him in on a free transfer after his contract expires in June.
Neil’s signing could secure Wrexham’s midfield for future
Wrexham’s midfield currently boasts as many as six options, including Zak Vyner as a makeshift. However, the department has been the most depleted recently with injuries to Ben Sheaf, Matty James and a brief suspension of Dobson.
While all have been missed in their own ways, no one has been missed more by the club faithful than Matty James. If the veteran midfielder’s first injury of his Wrexham spell has fans worried, it’ll be difficult to imagine replacing him when he eventually leaves.
That’s where Dan Neil’s signing could come in as a long‑term replacement for James. Having led a Premier League promotion‑winning side at just 24, Neil has the experience to step into Matty’s shoes.
What’s also worth noting is that Neil’s familiarity with George Dobson from their Sunderland days could help build strong chemistry in the middle of the park.
Additionally, Neil’s arrival could secure Wrexham’s midfield for the future. With Dobson and Sheaf both 28, and Lewis O’Brien only 27, signing Neil would guarantee a strong midfield core for the next five to six years.
Overall, Dan Neil’s signing is one that Wrexham should consider this summer. While he is an exciting choice if Wrexham get promoted to the Premier League, Neil can be a must-have if they need to spend another season in the Championship.
