Championship expert predicts winner from Wrexham Vs Southampton clash

Matt SB predicts the much-anticipated Wrexham Vs Southampton clash to end in a 1-1 draw at the Racecourse.

The upcoming Wrexham vs Southampton clash is touted as the most decisive affair of the Championship playoff race. If the playoff spot at stake makes it a virtual knockout, the fact that both sides possess some advantages going into the fixture makes it even more exciting.

From Wrexham’s perspective, they enter matchday 41 at the Racecourse while sitting in a playoff spot. Southampton, meanwhile, bring a 12‑game unbeaten streak and better momentum.

Forecasting a winner while balancing these two scenarios is a challenge in itself. Perhaps that’s why Matt SB predicted a point‑sharing draw when asked to preview the clash.

Speaking on his YouTube Channel, Matt SB acknowledged the pull of Wrexham’s story: “Wrexham, you just feel like there’s always a fairy tale ending. It’s just something magic is probably going to happen at the end of this season. Doesn’t feel like a Wrexham story for them to miss out on the playoffs, but I can’t just go on that.”

Matt SB dropped his prediction, mentioning, “1-1 is my prediction. The real winners, if it’s a draw, is probably Hull City.”

Hull could be the real winner from Wrexham Vs Southampton

On a narrower scale, the Championship playoff race is now only open for the final 6th spot. That sounds fair given the four‑point gap between 5th‑placed Hull and 6th‑placed Wrexham, but a scenario could emerge where the Tigers’ own qualification comes under threat.

Hull’s form hasn’t been as convincing as their playoff position might suggest. Once automatic promotion contenders, they could slip out of the playoffs if results turn against them.

Notably, Hull had lost five out of their last ten games before matchday 41. Though the Tigers earned a draw in their latest game against Coventry, they remain just four points above Wrexham, who have a game in hand.

Southampton, meanwhile, could practically leapfrog Hull if they win their two games in hand.

In this scenario, a draw between Wrexham and Southampton would benefit Hull City the most. A 1‑1 result, as predicted, would split the points between the two playoff rivals.

With Wrexham’s tally going to 65, they will remain three points behind Hull. Southampton, meanwhile, would lose the power to decide their own fate. This way, a draw between the Reds and the Saints could bolster Hull City’s playoff hopes the most.

Wrexham fans will love “fairy tale ending” again

While Wrexham fans will want more than the predicted 1‑1 draw, they would resonate strongly with the fairy‑tale ending Matt SB referenced. That’s because each of the club’s promotion stories has had a Hollywood‑level storyline with a dramatic finish.

For instance, take the 2024/25 season. In the League One campaign, both Wycombe and Wrexham were battling hard to secure the second automatic promotion spot for the Championship.

At one point, Wrexham had slipped to third after matchday 43. They moved to 83 points with a draw, but Wycombe’s win saw them leapfrog the Reds with 84 points.

Then Wycombe lost all three of their remaining matches. This helped Wrexham seal automatic promotion on the penultimate matchday, even though the race had been expected to go to the final day.

The 2023/24 League Two promotion race was even more intense. Wrexham and Mansfield Town both battled for the second automatic spot, with the race going down to the final matchday.

Mansfield Town drew and finished on 86 points. However, Wrexham beat Stockport to reach 88 points and secured promotion despite having an inferior goal difference.

It’s been well documented that a last‑minute miracle somehow puts everything in place to reward Wrexham’s season‑long progress. This time, the club will hope for another fairy‑tale ending to their promotion charge.

But it all starts with a win or at least a draw against Southampton. A loss could make it really difficult for the Reds to catch an in‑form Saints side again.
