‘Frustrating player’ – Wrexham fans make true Issa Kabore feelings clear after loan exit

Wrexham fans react to Issa Kabore’s departure as the full-back returns to Man City after a successful 2025/26 loan campaign in the Championship.

Recently, season five of the award‑winning docuseries Welcome to Wrexham was released on FX Hulu and Disney+ UK. While the new season gives the club faithful a chance to relive their 2025/26 Championship campaign, fans must have been taken aback by the announcements that followed.

That’s because Wrexham fans have had to say goodbye to club hero Andy Cannon, who has been released ahead of next season. That decision has been followed by the departures of Jay Rodriguez and Issa Kaboré’s return to Man City after a successful loan spell.

Understandably, the exits of these players will impact the Reds in ways unknown. However, the most recent decision on Issa Kaboré has taken centre stage in discussions among the club faithful.

That’s because the on‑loan wing‑back has been one of Wrexham’s most impressive players this campaign. That makes the club’s decision even harder for fans to accept, especially after a permanent deal for Kaboré stood as a real possibility earlier last season.

Most Wrexham fans have been affected by the club’s decision on Kaboré’s future. Having enjoyed the wing‑back’s flair and creativity on the right all season, supporters took a moment to thank the loanee for his contributions.

One fan wrote: “How unfortunate for us. He was developing very well, and made a couple of very key plays this season. Wish we could have bought his contract. Best of luck to him, with all sincerity.”

Kaboré finished the 2025/26 campaign with eight assists in 30 Championship appearances. That tally makes him the club’s top assister last season, and his contributions in decisive games against Coventry and Middlesbrough will live long in the memory.

Against Coventry on the penultimate matchday, Kaboré set up Rathbone in the box to cancel out the league leaders’ early lead. In the must‑win season finale against Middlesbrough, he was electric again as he crossed for Sam Smith to put Wrexham 2‑1 ahead in the 41st minute.

His decisiveness and ability to step up in crucial games showed that Kaboré was too good for the Championship at his best. But while fans acknowledge his attacking prowess, a section of supporters has pointed out the defensive inconsistencies that may have prevented him from becoming a Premier League player already.

One Wrexham supporter summed up Kabore’s spell, saying: “Frustrating player – one week he looks like he could play in the Premier League and week after the Welsh Premier League.”

Has Wrexham made the wrong call on Kabore’s future?

Despite some valid criticism of Kaboré’s defensive frailties that cost Wrexham on a couple of occasions, the consensus remains that the loanee showed enough for the Reds to push for a permanent signing.

In fact, fans didn’t hesitate to call Wrexham’s decision a possible misstep if they fail to replace him next season. One supporter mentioned, “We should have kept him and picked up more speed on the other wing. I think this is a misstep if we don’t pick up at least 3 wingers with speed.”

Kaboré’s impressive pace on the right wing was both a catalyst and, at times, an antagonist for Wrexham. It helped him create chances with ease, but the lack of a similarly pacy full‑back on the opposite flank left the Reds vulnerable when tracking back after losing possession.

From that perspective, Kaboré’s exit gives Wrexham a fresh slate to rebuild their wing‑back department. The club still have options in Longman and Ryan Barnett, but they will be in the market for a quality right‑back as a starting option for next season.

For now, it remains to be seen how Wrexham’s decision to let go of Kaboré after his loan spell plays out. It’s unclear whether the club made the call internally or had to surrender to Manchester City’s decision to retain him after an impressive loan, but one thing is certain that the right‑back will not be wearing Wrexham’s red and white next season.
