Wrexham player ratings from 2-0 Birmingham City defeat: Okonkwo and Doyle poor

Wrexham player ratings from the 2-0 away Championship defeat to Birmingham City. Arthur Okonkwo and Callum Doyle were poor in defence.

Wrexham have gone from inconsistent to poor, to now defensively shocking since March. The Reds are struggling to avoid conceding first in the Championship these days. Now, Wrexham look toothless in attack as well.

Phil Parkinson’s men were handed a playoffs lifeline to go and win at Birmingham City and close the gap on Hull City to only one point. Moreover, Wrexham had dominated Birmingham City in the previous two league meetings before eventually falling to a 1-1 draw on both occasions.

Here, Wrexham didn’t even put up a fight. Birmingham City were all over Wrexham on Sunday with a typical long ball and crossing tactic. The visitors suffered from it, and worse enough, didn’t even do anything to keep the hosts from scoring.

Carlos Vicente and Christoph Klarer scored for the Blues from two crosses into the box which was a fairly deserved result from Birmingham City’s point of view. The hosts defeated Wrexham 2-0, which could have been 3-0 also with a bit of better finishing.

Almost every Wrexham player was poor on the evening. That said, below are the Wrexham player ratings of every starter on a scale of 10 who succumbed to a 2-0 convincing defeat to Birmingham City.

Wrexham player ratings from 2-0 Birmingham City defeat

GK: Arthur Okonkwo – 5

Bailed out Callum Doyle on a first half 1v1 chance by making himself big. But Okonkwo’s second half was poor. Conceded a header at his near post from a considerable distance out, and then watched on the 2-0 goal without following the delivery’s trajectory.

CB: Callum Doyle – 4

Birmingham City regularly targeted Callum Doyle and exploited space left by him at the back. Failed to mark players on set-pieces, skied one decent attempt from outside the box.

Worst of all, Doyle was lazy to follow Carlos Vicente and nearly gifted a 1-0 to the visitors right before half-time.

CB: Dan Scarr – 5

Phil Parkinson finally changed the centre-back pairing by dropping Dom Hyam for Dan Scarr. In Hyam’s place, Scarr went ahead to intercept attacks further down the pitch but failed at the task. Still, Scarr was lucky enough that no goal was conceded due to his shortcomings.

CB: Max Cleworth – 6

Max Cleworth closed the angle on a couple of Birmingham City shots. Did a lot of running while dealing with counters. Despite that, Cleworth let Christoph Klarer slide a late tap-in and vanish Wrexham’s hopes of snatching a 1-1 draw.

LWB: George Thomason – 4

Just like at Southampton, George Thomason was non-existent for Wrexham on the left flank. Not only that, Thomason got beaten to the header on a curling delivery by Carlos Vicente that found the back of the net.

CM: Matty James – 4

Injuries have reduced Matty James agility to be honest. Got dispossessed easily on the ball, and had no clue to deal with Birmingham City’s intense press.

CM: George Dobson – 7

George Dobson stood out in a struggling Wrexham midfield. Sent a long ball to Kieffer Moore, fought to win balls inside the Wrexham half and denied Jay Stansfield a toe poke from close range to keep Wrexham at 0-0 during the first half.

RWB: Issa Kabore – 6

Issa Kabore isn’t good at defending headers, yet he followed his marker every time. Got forward once with a smooth dribble before opening up shooting space for Kieffer Moore, but nothing came from it.

CAM: Ollie Rathbone – 4

Josh Windass is the only Wrexham player who presents a scoring threat these days. Still, Phil Parkinson benched him to start Ollie Rathbone after a long while.

Rathbone played a nice give and go with Kieffer Moore which was the only meaningful chance he created. Wasn’t much of a surprise that Wrexham couldn’t score a goal without Windass in the starting lineup.

CAM: Lewis O’Brien – 5

Lewis O’Brien didn’t had a bad game. However, Wrexham just end up winless more often than not, whenever O’Brien plays as an attacking midfielder. From next time, O’Brien should be brought back in central midfield with Matty James on the bench.

ST: Kieffer Moore – 4

2026 has not been Kieffer Moore’s year and it doesn’t seem to change until May. Made a heavy touch on Wrexham’s best chance from the edge of the box. Sam Smith could have done much better instead as a striker.
