Wrexham told best path to reach Championship playoffs despite a sloppy April form consisting of a 2-2 West Brom draw and a 5-1 Southampton humiliation.
Wrexham are going through a Championship crisis right now. March saw the Reds losing players to injuries and suspensions, to then Wrexham losing games at half-time. If that wasn’t bad enough, then the 5-1 misery suffered against Southampton has almost thrown the playoffs plans out of the window.
By now, a majority of Wrexham fans have made peace with the club not achieving promotion this time around. After all, falling 2 points behind Southampton with a game played more doesn’t give confidence about Wrexham leapfrogging Southampton in the table. And claim the top 6 spot to go through to the playoffs.
But all hope isn’t lost. Wrexham still have 5 games to salvage something meaningful from an up-and-down campaign. Going by former Wales striker Malcolm Allen’s thoughts, Phil Parkinson’s men have a way to reach the Championship playoffs.
Former Wales striker backs Wrexham to grab playoffs spot
In his own words, the BBC quoted Malcolm Allen’s Wrexham playoffs verdict: “Wrexham will take it to the final game – they will finish sixth. Hull will drop out”

Well, Allen sounds more wishful and every Wrexham fan can see through it. Hull City are four points atop Wrexham with the same 41 games played. If the Reds want to dethrone Hull outside of the playoffs zone, then Wrexham has to ideally win all of their remaining games in the first place.
And hope that the Tigers take 4-5 points less than them during the run-in. This same Hull City squad crushed Wrexham 2-0 and 2-1 this season, so, it’s a good thing, in fact, that Phil Parkinson’s men don’t have to play them again. Coming to the important part. Is it possible to overtake Hull City? Well, Hull City’s current form says so.
Hull City – Championship form and remaining games
Since beating Wrexham 2-1, Hull City have put their foot off the gas in the Championship. The Tigers then went on to lose 3-0 against lowly lying West Brom, defeated Sheffield Wednesday 3-1 but played two draws afterwards.

One of them was a 1-1 frustrating evening at Oxford United and a 0-0 stalemate with league leaders Coventry City. Clearly, if there is any playoffs contender Wrexham can believe will drop points then that’s Hull City.
Today, they play Sheffield United and then Wrexham’s current rivals Birmingham City the following week. These teams can snatch 3-4 points from Hull City which is exactly what the Red Dragons need.
Hull City’s last three matches are against Leicester City, Charlton Athletic and Norwich City. Those are comparatively easier games. Hull would most likely stroll to comfortable wins in each of them.
All in all, today and the upcoming weekend can tell a lot about whether Wrexham can hope for a playoffs miracle or not. But in any case, Phil Parkinson’s men need to adopt a winning routine. The last time Wrexham won two Championship games in a row was back in February.
It’s not a positive stat to look at. At the same time, Wrexham have won as much as 4 games in a row when the situation demanded. Let’s see if the Reds can spring a late Championship top 6 surprise.
