Wrexham drop Manchester United confirmation amid fading Premier League hopes

Wrexham announce the long-discussed friendly against Manchester United in Finland on 18th July 2026.

The final five matchdays remain in the Championship campaign, and the decisive stretch of the season is also packing up. With Wrexham’s playoff charge slipping, the club’s plans for a stronger push next season have already begun.

Wrexham’s transfer rumour mill has never stopped suggesting squad upgrade opportunities. Beyond that, the club are planning for next season’s preparations with high‑profile friendlies.

Previously, Wrexham confirmed a triple Premier League showdown in a friendly series against Leeds, Liverpool, and Sunderland. Now, they’ve added another top‑flight giant to their summer calendar after announcing the Finland tour to face Manchester United on 18th July in Helsinki.

Wrexham CEO Michael Williamson expressed excitement for the tour, saying: “It will be a great occasion, at a famous venue against an iconic opponent, and just as importantly a good test on the pitch as part of our pre-season preparations.”

Wrexham Vs Man United friendly finally comes to fruition

It’s worth noting that a friendly showdown between Wrexham and Man United has long been discussed. While talks of this contest have been circulating since December 2025, the game has now been officially announced.

Wrexham CEO Michael Williamson summed it up perfectly that the game will serve as brilliant preparation for a highly anticipated 2026/27 campaign. While a challenging opponent in Man United will bring their sporting best, the friendly tour comes with other benefits too.

Notably, this will be Wrexham’s first visit to Finland for a friendly or any competitive game. Having focused mainly on the American and domestic markets, the tour to the Nordic country will help unlock a new fanbase.

Regarding the tour, Michael Williamson added: “We look forward to seeing our supporters in Finland, and meeting new fans from the Nordic region too.”

The trip to Finland comes with financial benefits as well. While Manchester United are expected to generate more revenue due to their larger global brand, Wrexham gains access to a new market to expand their brand alongside appreciable economic rewards.

The friendly against United completes Wrexham’s summer calendar in style. With a game against Wisła Kraków on 11th July, the Finland tour to face the Red Devils on 18th July, and the USA Summer Soccer Series starting on 25th July, a set of five friendlies is perfect for the club’s pre‑season preparations.

Will Wrexham face any other Premier League opponents this year?

Wrexham have seen immense growth in the quality of their opponents in recent years. The fact that they’ve gone from rare friendlies against Football League clubs to now scheduling Premier League friendlies speaks to their rise.

But this rapid surge has brought plenty of fan expectations as well. If that wasn’t enough, Wrexham’s 2025/26 campaign had supporters hopeful for regular Premier League action until very recently.

The 5‑1 defeat to Southampton in the virtual playoff decider has dealt a severe blow to Wrexham’s hopes. The Reds aren’t mathematically out of the race, but a miracle is now needed to secure the final playoff spot.

If Wrexham fail to leapfrog Southampton, the club’s calendar for Premier League opponents may already be out for this year. With games against Manchester United, Leeds, Liverpool, and Sunderland, Wrexham will see out 2026 with four top‑flight friendlies.

If Wrexham win Premier League promotion this term, fans will be in for many more contests against top‑flight clubs.

As things stand, Wrexham’s promotion fate is unlikely to be decided before the final matchday of the Championship campaign. The same goes for the number of Premier League opponents they will face before the end of 2026.
