Wrexham planning to raid Leicester City for 30-year-old England international

Wrexham are interested in signing 30-year-old Leicester midfielder Harry Winks for a free transfer this summer.

Wrexham’s recent defeat to Birmingham in a must‑win game carries plenty of lessons. While Phil Parkinson remains hopeful of a playoff place, the club have identified their midfield sloppiness as an area that needs improvement going ahead.

Previously, Wrexham were touted to consider Dan Neil as a midfield option to strengthen their ranks. While updates on that rumour are yet to arrive, the club has shown interest in a similar Championship profile.

The player in question is Leicester City midfielder Harry Winks. According to Sportsboom, Wrexham are among the leading suitors interested in signing the Championship title winner for a free transfer this summer.

Wrexham are interested in pursuing Harry Winks

Wrexham’s interest in Harry Winks stems from a number of reasons. The 30‑year‑old could fill the Reds’ troubled midfield department most naturally.

It’s no secret that injuries to Matty James and Ben Sheaf have derailed Wrexham’s playoff charge. While the club sat in the playoff zone with them on the side, they are now close to being forced out of the playoff equation.

Although injuries to James and Sheaf within two weeks in mid‑February were unfortunate on Wrexham’s part, the situation wasn’t completely unforeseen.

Speaking of Ben Sheaf, his injury history has been a pre‑existing concern. Despite his quality, Sheaf had missed around 30 games over the previous two seasons for Coventry before joining Wrexham last summer.

Factor in that Wrexham relied only on him, along with an ageing Matty James, came with its own risks and assessments of an injury crisis happening.

Unsurprisingly, Wrexham wouldn’t want another midfield injury crisis to derail their promotion push ever again. That’s where a technical profile like Harry Winks comes in as an ideal choice.

Winks is one of the rare market options available despite having played for three top‑flight clubs. His Premier League pedigree with Tottenham and Leicester, combined with his contribution to Leicester’s title‑winning Championship campaign, makes him a go‑to option for Wrexham.

Winks hasn’t been a regular for Leicester in the last couple of seasons, but that has been for miscellaneous reasons rather than injury issues. Given his 2023/24 campaign, when he played 45 games for Enzo Maresca’s title‑winning side, Winks can be trusted for regular availability.

Winks’ Leicester situation could offer easy move to Wrexham

When fit, Harry Winks is arguably one of the best tempo‑controlling midfielders available. His dip in form over the last two seasons, however, has been due to reasons off the pitch.

After being an untouchable starter in Leicester’s 2023/24 Championship‑winning campaign, Winks was expected to play a key role in the Premier League. But the club’s underwhelming performances, combined with a fallout with boss Ruud van Nistelrooy, affected his campaign.

Having already missed some games through injury, his feud with Van Nistelrooy near the end of the campaign reduced his season appearances to just 22 in the 2024/25 Premier League season.

Although Nistelrooy’s departure ahead of 2025/26 helped his case, Winks couldn’t recover his reputation among the Leicester faithful. Mid‑season, he was frozen out of the club’s plans after manager Martí Cifuentes deemed his commitment no longer aligned with the club’s values.

Since Cifuentes’s departure in January 2026, Winks has been reintegrated into the Leicester side. But as one of the highest‑paid players at the club, he is often criticised for not proving his worth in a relegation campaign.

While that is a problematic situation for Winks, Wrexham could use it to convince him on a free transfer move. His contract ends this summer, and he is unlikely to be renewed by the Foxes.

This opens the door for Wrexham to lure him with the prospect of Championship football and a possible Premier League promotion. Given the Reds’ quality, a move for Winks could be a win‑win for both parties.
