Rangers return for Wrexham POTS Josh Windass after brilliant debut season

Scottish giants Rangers have reignited their interest in Josh Windass despite being denied a move by Wrexham in January 2026.

Recently, Wrexham received an indirect rejection for long‑standing target Terry Devlin. With Portsmouth uninterested in listening to offers for the rising right‑back, they are unlikely to entertain the Reds even if Wrexham push harder for his signing.

If being denied a chance to strengthen ahead of next season wasn’t enough, Wrexham have now received an update that could end up weakening their own roster further.

That’s because Rangers are back with a fresh approach to swoop away star attacker Josh Windass from the Racecourse. Although the Gers returned empty‑handed in their January attempt, they aren’t giving up on the player any time soon.

Football correspondent Ben Jacobs reported: “Rangers have made a fresh approach to Josh Windass to discuss bringing him back to Ibrox. It follows an attempt in January which Wrexham rebuffed. Move driven by Danny Rohl, who had Windass at Sheffield Wednesday. No club-to-club talks yet. Wrexham had indicated in January they didn’t want to sell.”

Rangers reignite Windass interest ahead of a massive summer

As Ben Jacobs details, Rangers are back in their mission to sign Josh Windass. Although the club were denied by Wrexham in January, their renewed interest likely surged from what they have seen from Windass in the second half of the season.

Josh Windass was Wrexham’s most clinical player throughout the 2025/26 campaign. While the 32‑year‑old proved it by emerging as the club’s top scorer, his form toward the end of the season was simply unstoppable.

While other Wrexham attackers like Kieffer Moore and Sam Smith struggled, Windass consistently stepped up in the club’s playoff race. Whether through long‑range finishes or decisive finishes in the box, he scored six goals in his last seven starts toward the business end of the campaign.

If there was one player who deserved to feature in the playoffs, it was Josh Windass. His former club Rangers have now presented him with a key opportunity as they look to sign him and go all-in for the Scottish Premiership title next season.

Notably, Rangers had a massive turnaround for the better under Danny Röhl after a sluggish start to the 2025/26 campaign. However, they lost momentum toward the end and slipped down to third place.

Nevertheless, the club’s ambitious owners are already planning for a strong title push next season. Having come unimaginably close to signing in‑form star Lawrence Shankland, they now eye Windass as their next ambitious signing in what could be a massive summer window for Rangers

Windass’ exit could come with massive profit and club record

Wrexham made their stance on Josh Windass clear to Rangers back in January. Following the attacker’s massive show in the business end of the season, the Reds are unlikely to allow an easy departure.

But setting aside the sporting aspect, Windass’s possible transfer could be a lucrative deal for Wrexham. Having brought him in on a free transfer in the summer of 2025, any fee they receive would be pure profit for their books.

Additionally, a marquee sale could see Wrexham rewrite their history books for the largest club sale ever. Known as ambitious buyers since their Hollywood era, the Reds’ biggest departure fee from a single sale remains only the £1m received from Bryan Hughes’s exit in 1997.

Given Windass’s form and his previous success under Danny Röhl, Rangers could be willing to part with a handsome fee to acquire the attacker. Whether they get him or not, however, remains in Wrexham’s hands.

What is certain is that the Josh Windass to Rangers saga has gathered fresh momentum ahead of the summer window. It remains to be seen whether Wrexham will cash in for a substantial fee or remain adamant in keeping him as a key attacking option.
