Leicester City are plotting an unbelievable Wrexham transfer raid for goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo following the Foxes 2025/26 Championship relegation.
In 2024, Leicester City gained Premier League promotion while Wrexham geared for League One football after an automatic promotion from League Two. Fast forward to now, Wrexham are sitting in the Championship while Leicester City have fallen down to League One.
Honestly, it’s incredible how promotions work in football. As it stands, Leicester City’s climb to the Premier League will likely take longer than Wrexham’s. But does that make Wrexham a more attractive destination for top talents than a fallen Premier League giant like Leicester City?
Probably not. The Foxes enter League One as arguably the biggest team in the division based on squad talent. They will likely spend more in the summer transfer window to dominate League One and send a statement of intent to Championship clubs.
Well, Leicester City are wasting no time in doing so. The Foxes are on the brink of hiring former Southampton and Rangers boss Russell Martin who holds a Championship promotion on his CV. In terms of player signings, Leicester City are looking to start things off by raiding Wrexham.
Leicester City plot Wrexham transfer raid for Arthur Okonkwo
According to an AllAboutLeagueOne report: “Leicester City are interested in 24 year old Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo”. At first glance, it feels like a downgrade for Okonkwo to consider a Leicester City switch when they are atleast a couple years away from a Premier League return.
But delving deep on this rumour, it makes valid sense. Leicester City sold former No.1 Mads Hermansen to West Ham for £20m last summer and didn’t brought a proper keeper replacement. Jakub Stolarczyk was promoted to Leicester’s first team and the veteran Asmir Begovic deputised in the Poland youth international’s absence.

Together they kept only 6 clean sheets and conceded a mammoth 68 Championship goals that saw Leicester City sink down to League One. Relying on the underperforming keeping pair for League One will be similar to playing with fire, as the Foxes might struggle there too if they can’t sign a safety net in goal.
Arthur Okonkwo’s signing will give Leicester City just what they need. The Nigerian international led Wrexham to automatic promotion from League One over 12 months ago, and kept 19 clean sheets there from the 33 matches he played.
Arthur Okonkwo should consider Leicester City transfer on one condition
Since last week, there have been many rumours linking Wrexham to move for Sunderland’s keeper Anthony Patterson. At 26, Patterson has proven his mettle in the Championship with 1 Premier League promotion and 3 playoffs qualifications in total under his belt.
If Wrexham can afford Patterson’s £8m asking price, it’s obvious the Red Dragons will prefer starting him over Okonkwo. That will push Okonkwo to a Wrexham exit anyway, and who knows, he might have to accept a mid-table Championship club as his new destination instead of Leicester City.
Clubs like Bristol City, Watford and Derby County can give Okonkwo assurance of regular Championship football but they can’t match the possibility of jumping 2 divisions quickly and getting to the Premier League in 2-3 years like Leicester City.
Moreover, if Okonkwo plays a starring role in the Foxes future Premier League return his stock will rise more in English football with more top-flight clubs taking notice. Okonkwo’s current Wrexham contract expires in 2027.
Best case, the goalkeeper should get clarity on Wrexham’s future plans for him and accordingly sign a contract extension or leave Racecourse for a better opportunity this summer itself. In case Okonkwo bids goodbye to Wrexham, let’s see whether he ends at the King Power or somewhere else.
