Wrexham should sign Sunderland left-back for free as Liberato Cacace alternative

Wrexham should consider the option of Dennis Cirkin for their left wing‑back role after the player announced he will leave Sunderland and become a free agent this summer.

Wrexham’s successful 2025/26 Championship campaign stemmed from their summer transfer business. Barring a few exceptions, most arrivals proved helpful as the Reds finished just outside the playoff zone.

On the downside, the remaining arrivals were quite disappointing. In particular, the case of Liberato Cacace proved particularly disappointing as the left‑back couldn’t aid Wrexham’s promotion cause as much as hoped due to persistent fitness concerns.

While the upcoming season represents a fresh start for Cacace, Wrexham would not be completely confident with him as the only left‑back in the squad. This could compel the Reds to hunt for a suitable alternative in the transfer market and an emerging update plays perfectly into their hands.

Recently, Sunderland left‑back Dennis Cirkin announced he will leave the Black Cats when his contract expires this summer. His availability could be a massive opportunity for clubs like Wrexham that are looking to strengthen their wing‑back position.

Dennis Cirkin could slot in seamlessly in Wrexham’s setup

Cirkin’s profile ought to lure Wrexham in multiple ways. While the left‑back possesses considerable EFL experience apart from a Premier League pedigree, his record as a two‑time promotion winner with Sunderland could compel the Reds to make a move.

Notably, Cirkin helped the Black Cats gain promotion from League One to the Championship as a regular mainstay in the lineup. Having played 37 games in the 2021/22 campaign, his defensive contributions were a key factor in Sunderland’s rise to the Championship.

The following season, Cirkin proved his attacking prowess in helping Sunderland reach the Championship playoffs. Although he missed out on a second consecutive promotion, he ultimately achieved his Premier League dream by winning promotion via the playoffs in the 2024/25 campaign.

Cirkin’s traits make him a perfect fit for Wrexham’s style of play. With the club known to rely on wing‑backs who provide width on the flanks while balancing defensive and attacking responsibilities, he comes as a brilliant option available for grabs this summer.

There is no denying that Cirkin had a disappointing 2025/26 campaign. While he managed only eight Premier League games in his inaugural top‑flight season, the left‑back’s quality could still be seen on occasion.

In one notable instance, he stood out in the Premier League fixture against ManCity. Rock solid with as many as 11 defensive contributions, Cirkin also did not hesitate to drive forward against Pep Guardiola’s side. His gritty display was key as Sunderland broke City’s eight‑game winning streak.

Wrexham must consider one aspect before pursuing Cirkin

Having left Sunderland after his inaugural Premier League campaign, Dennis Cirkin is bound to attract significant transfer interest this summer. While Wrexham could be among the suitors, the Reds would be cautious about one aspect before deciding on their interest.

The issue in question is Cirkin’s unreliable fitness record. There is no denying that he is one of the best left‑back options at the Championship level. However, his injury history would pose a constant challenge for any club interested in pursuing him.

Notably, Cirkin missed around 20 games solely due to injury in the 2025/26 campaign. What is further concerning is that last season was not a rare occurrence, and he has had an extensive injury record throughout his five‑year stay at Sunderland.

While his ability could attract interest from Wrexham, the club would be particularly wary of making a move. Having already been disappointed by Liberato Cacace’s injury‑riddled spell last season, the Reds would be cautious about bringing in Cirkin as an alternative.

That being said, Cirkin has had several impressive successes in his career when fit. It remains to be seen whether Wrexham consider his profile appropriate and look toward a possible move following Cacace’s disappointing spell in the left wing‑back role.
