League One club plots summer swoop for Wrexham wonderkid Harry Ashfield

League One club Peterborough United is plotting a 2026 summer swoop for Wrexham wonderkid Harry Ashfield.

Harry Ashfield is currently the biggest wonderkid emerging from Wrexham’s academy. Three years ago, he marked his senior Wrexham debut while coming on as a late substitute in the 3-0 EFL Trophy win over Crewe Alexandra.

The following 2024/25 season, Ashfield went one step better by starting more games in the EFL Trophy and got a career first Wrexham goal in the 4-1 Port Vale rout. In 2025/26, Ashfield was initially expected to carry a prominent squad role after scoring the Carabao Cup 2nd round equaliser against Preston North End in the 3-2 win.

Unfortunately, that progression didn’t happen last season. Phil Parkinson’s men started the Championship season poorly and coupled with Ashfield’s inexperience, the teenager was sent out to League Two club Cheltenham Town on a six-month winter loan.

Ashfield saw quite a lot of success there. The 20-year-old playmaker nailed on a starting spot for Cheltenham as the season went on and grabbed 2 goals alongside an assist to prevent his loan club from a relegation battle.

Thanks to those performances, Ashfield earned a Wales U-21 call-up in March although he didn’t feature in any of the games. That said, the upcoming 2026/27 season will be a decisive one for Harry Ashfield’s Wrexham future.

He is no longer the rising prodigy Wrexham can keep loaning to National League and League Two clubs. At 20, Ashfield needs to get a taste of League One and soon enough, Championship football to keep his hopes alive of one day making it to the Premier League.

It will equally be helpful to Wrexham, after all, the Red Dragons aren’t far away from living the Premier League dream.

Peterborough United plotting summer swoop for Harry Ashfield

According to a recent Football Insider report, League One outfit Peterborough United is eyeing a Harry Ashfield summer swoop. The Posh fell to an 18th place finish in the third tier and barely managed League One safety with a terrible end-of-season form that saw them lose 3 out of the last 5 matches with the other two being draws.

As such, Peterborough will be desperate to seek a mid-table finish for 2026/27. Harry Ashfield isn’t the star player who will lead their League One ascent, but if backed properly, the highly-rated Wrexham talent can help Peterborough avoid lengthy win droughts and inspire attacking creativity at the other end of the pitch.

It’s worth noting that Harry Ashfield’s current Wrexham contract expires in 2027 summer, exactly a year on from now. Most likely, Wrexham will extend his contract by a couple of years before agreeing to send him off to Peterborough on a temporary basis.

Or, better Phil Parkinson can make a bold call by assessing Ashfield in the 2026 preseason to see how much progress he has made.

If the young Welshman can match the speed and chemistry of first team starters like Rathbone, Broadhead and Windass against preseason opponents like Manchester United and Liverpool then Ashfield might get one last chance to fight for a starting role at his boyhood club Wrexham itself.
