Wrexham are among the multiple Championship clubs interested in signing former Arsenal starlet and current Polish Top-Flight midfielder Sam Greenwood.
Recently, Wrexham keeper Arthur Okonkwo won his first trophy for Nigeria in the Unity Cup victory. A maiden Cup win in his inaugural games for Nigeria is rather impressive, though it’s hardly surprising for the Reds given his quality as a former Arsenal talent.
Throughout the 2025/26 campaign, Okonkwo was key in keeping Wrexham in playoff contention. A significant reason the Reds overperformed in their Championship return was the stepping up of the ex‑Arsenal trio, Okonkwo, Ben Sheaf, and George Dobson.
Wrexham are already one of the rare Championship sides to have as many as three talents hailing from a Big Six club like Arsenal. What is more interesting is that the Reds are looking to expand their quality pool further by targeting another former Gunner.
The player in question is attacking midfielder Sam Greenwood. After leaving Arsenal in 2020, Greenwood has had some impressive spells in the Championship and the Polish top flight, which has attracted Wrexham’s interest in signing him.
A couple of weeks ago, Goal Poland named Wrexham among three Championship clubs interested in Greenwood. Recently, FLW tipped the Reds to make a move, suggesting the Pogoń Szczecin midfielder could be an “ideal player” to bring to the Racecourse in an ambitious transfer.
Greenwood’s former Championship experience interests Wrexham
There’s no denying that Sam Greenwood’s 2025/26 campaign wasn’t his best. But despite it being his first season in the Polish top flight, the attacker adapted reasonably well by scoring three goals and contributing two assists in the 20 league appearances he made.
While such adaptability has been a factor that interests Wrexham, the Reds’ primary interest is likely drawn by Greenwood’s familiarity with English conditions and the Championship level.
Sam Greenwood has spent a significant chunk of his professional career in the Championship. After joining Leeds United’s youth setup from Arsenal, he has been exposed to Championship game time much more than to the Premier League.
After Leeds dropped to the Championship in 2023, the attacker was loaned to fellow Championship side Middlesbrough for a season‑long spell. During that time, he scored five goals and contributed three assists in a decent campaign while featuring in multiple roles for Boro.

In the following 2024/25 season, Greenwood was once again loaned to the Championship. In a new challenge at Preston, he improved upon his previous tally, finishing with 10 goal contributions overall.
Donning multiple roles on the wing as well as spearheading the attack, Greenwood was among the rare bright spots for Preston as the side finished just above the relegation zone.
In multiple spells, Greenwood has proven his scoring ability and the set‑piece threat he brings to the side. Although his scoring consistency remains an issue, the attacking midfielder could come in handy for Wrexham in their promotion quest.
Parkinson can use Greenwood to improve Wrexham’s attack further
A primary concern that derailed Wrexham’s promotion hopes in the decisive phase of the 2025/26 season was their mounting injury problems. With the squad fatigued from a heavy Championship schedule, the Reds failed to capitalise on the momentum they had built until March.
Add in Phil Parkinson’s reluctance to properly utilise untested options like Davis Keillor‑Dunn and Bailey Cadamarteri, and the Reds’ attack looked toothless except for Josh Windass. In such a situation, a profile like Sam Greenwood might have helped Wrexham’s cause.
Even if Greenwood isn’t known as a regular goal scorer, his profile is appealing because of the work rate he brings to his side. Known to operate in a free, versatile role, the attacker would have added to Wrexham’s attack when they needed it most.
Furthermore, Wrexham’s drop in intensity in the first half of fixtures was a common concern towards the end of the 2025/26 campaign. With a player like Greenwood in the squad, Phil Parkinson might have been able to resolve the issue better by adding his intense work rate, along with the set‑piece advantage he brings in addition to his open‑play contributions.
Overall, Sam Greenwood could emerge as a vital reinforcement for Wrexham if brought in as a summer arrival. With the club planning to mount a strong promotion push next season, Greenwood could be the missing piece to elevate their attack to a new level.
