Wrexham battle two Championship rivals for Austrian club’s highly rated 23-year-old midfielder

Wrexham are interested in signing 23-year-old Austrian Bundesliga midfielder Romeo Amane.

Wrexham’s recent developments hint at their summer transfer plans clearly. While the Reds have a couple of priority areas to address in the wing‑back department and midfield, the club are prioritising a strong addition in the centre of the park to kick off their summer business.

In this regard, their rising interest in Swansea star Ethan Galbraith stood as a vital target. But following West Ham’s entry into the midfielder’s transfer picture, the Reds have opted to explore less crowded markets.

This has led the club to scout an exciting 23‑year‑old prodigy from the Austrian Bundesliga. According to transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke, Wrexham are among the clubs keen on Rapid Vienna midfielder Romeo Amane.

O’Rourke reported the club’s interest: “Understand Championship trio Birmingham, Wrexham and Sheffield United are all eyeing moves for highly-rated Rapid Vienna midfielder Romeo Amane.”

Romeo Amane’s impressive Rapid Wien spell interests Wrexham

Amane’s consistent performances last season have been a key factor in attracting European interest. However, what needs mentioning is that the box‑to‑box midfielder has been impressive ever since signing for BK Häcken in 2022.

Although just 19 in his inaugural spell in the Allsvenskan for Häcken, the prodigy was key in their title‑winning campaign. Towards the end of the season, Amane began rising through the club’s pecking order as an important midfield asset.

In the following seasons, Amane emerged as an indispensable starter for BK Häcken. Apart from featuring in the Allsvenskan, the midfielder showed his ability to don multiple midfield roles in the Europa League campaign, gaining significant traction and praise.

His successful spells in the 2023 and 2024 Allsvenskan seasons earned him a €5m move to Rapid Wien in January 2025. While the second half of the 2024/25 Austrian Bundesliga season was an adaptation period for Amane, the midfielder has hit the ground running in the last campaign.

Amane played 31 league games for Wien in their eighth‑place finish in the Bundesliga campaign. While his three-goal contributions as a box‑to‑box midfielder showcased his playmaking skills, the 23‑year‑old has widely impressed with his work rate and physical abilities.

Wrexham need to level up efforts to win Amane’s crucial transfer

One of the key traits of Amane that ought to interest Wrexham is his high‑volume pressing and elite ball retention. Despite having quality midfielders like Ben Sheaf and Matty James, the Reds have lacked a young option to press effectively in the centre of the park.

Combine that with his passing accuracy, and Amane could be a huge success in Wrexham’s quick‑transition playing style. However, that would only become a reality if the Reds manage to prise the exciting midfielder away from the Austrian Bundesliga.

In this regard, the competition with Birmingham and Sheffield United would pose a significant challenge. With the Blues being ambitious spenders like Wrexham, and Sheffield United keen on a Premier League return, the Reds could struggle to close a deal for Amane.

Nevertheless, a player of Amane’s profile is a must‑have for Wrexham. Having already seen their pursuit of Ethan Galbraith complicated by West Ham’s entry, the club cannot afford to let another promising target slip away.

Financially, Amane’s signing could be one for the record books this Championship campaign. As a highly rated asset at just 23, playing in the Austrian top flight, it would take Wrexham much more than the €5m Rapid Wien spent to secure his services last year.
