Wrexham player ratings after a horrible 5-1 thrashing at home to Southampton

Wrexham player ratings after a horrible 5-1 thrashing at home to Southampton in the 41st Championship matchday.

Wrexham have been worse at the back for nearly a month now. The Reds last kept a clean sheet at Swansea City but have developed a habit of conceding multiple first half goals ever afterwards. Getting outplayed by Sheffield United and West Brom were already warning signs for Phil Parkinson’s men.

Sad to say but Wrexham don’t look as they have learned from their past mistakes. At Southampton, it was the same story. Wrexham failed to resist the visitors from scoring. Add a few missed crossbars chances, an awful passing display at times and Wrexham conceded a 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Southampton.

It’s never too late in the Championship playoffs race. Wrexham are on 64 points, 2 points below Southampton at seventh with only 5 games remaining as opposed to 6 matches left for the Saints. However, the top 6 hopes are almost gone for a Wrexham squad currently facing a free fall in the league.

On that note, below are the Wrexham player ratings of every Reds starter on a scale of 10 from a morale-crushing 5-1 defeat to Southampton.

Wrexham player ratings after a horrible 5-1 thrashing at home to Southampton

GK: Arthur Okonkwo – 7

Arthur Okonkwo was left stunned as Saints struck two crossbars in quick succession early on. Made a brilliant reactionary save on an acrobatic attempt and gave the pre-assist on Josh Windass goal.

CB: Callum Doyle – 4

Callum Doyle was beaten to the headers by Cyle Larin and Ross Stewart. Also, it was the 22-year-old who gave the cheaply on Southampton’s 1-0 opener before the visitors needed four more.

CB: Dom Hyam – 4

It’s rare to see a striker dominating Hyam but Saints forward Cyle Larin did exactly that. Failed to mark the Canadian striker on the third goal and had countless failed blocks throughout the night. To his merit, Hyam cleared a dangerous Saints header late on.

CB: Max Cleworth – 5

Max Cleworth was sent the wrong way on the first Southampton goal. Gave away the free kick that led to Southampton’s second of the night. Nearly nicked an assist when Broadhead’s header came off the post but that won’t cover up his flurry of defensive errors.

LWB: George Thomason – 5

Blocked crosses whenever he could and laid a key delivery in the box but no Wrexham forward was at hand to make the most of it.

CM: George Dobson – 6

Dobson tried to clear the free kick rebound but it wasn’t enough to deny Southampton from scoring the 2-0 goal. Brought the ball further up the pitch in hope of creating some chances but Wrexham never looked convincing while searching for an equaliser when the game stood at 2-1.

CM: Lewis O’Brien – 6

Lewis O’Brien found a bit of a gap in Southampton’s midfield to create Wrexham’s first big chance through a Nathan Broadhead header. Gave a backpass to Hyam that backfired on Larin’s 3-0 goal. O’Brien also sent a decent chip into the box but the resulting header left a lot to be desired.

RWB: Issa Kabore – 5

Issa Kabore also saw a cross denied by the post but otherwise had a poor game in defence. Misplaced a clearance that led to a crucial Southampton chance but thankfully Okonkwo bailed Kabore out there.

CAM: Nathan Broadhead – 5

Wrexham could have shown more resilience in front of Southampton had Nathan Broadhead’s header went in, minutes before Josh Windass scored. Still, the Welshman couldn’t find a way past James Bree on the left flank.

CAM: Josh Windass – 7

Josh Windass is Wrexham’s biggest hope these days after going behind in the game. Turned around before slotting home the 1-2 consolation goal and tried a weak header that was comfortably saved.

ST: Kieffer Moore – 7

Kieffer Moore tried his level best to bring goals for Wrexham up front. Paved the way for Josh Windass goal and won a header against Southampton keeper Daniel Peretz which bounced off the crossbar. One of the rare standout players for Wrexham on the pitch.
