£5m Wrexham signing Lewis O’Brien doesn’t regret joining Wrexham over Hull City and Southampton during the 2025 summer transfer window.
With 7 games to go, there are still around 5 Championship clubs fighting for a top 6 spot in April. Wrexham, Southampton and Hull City are the playoffs favourites so far, with two of them tipped to make it into the top 6 and compete for a Premier League promotion in May.
Out of them, Hull City are the best placed side at the moment with 66 points to their name. Southampton follow them with 63 points at sixth, and Wrexham are also languishing nearby with 63 points of their own. Being real, the Reds are the underdogs to surpass Southampton and Hull City up the table but never say never in the Championship.
Two wins for Phil Parkinson’s men, and a couple of draws for Southampton and Hull City will see Wrexham take the lead over them. Till now, Wrexham have played once against Southampton in the league and twice against Hull. Unfortunately, Phil Parkinson’s men have lost on all three occasions.

That said, Wrexham have a chance to seek revenge over both clubs by finishing the campaign above them. Doing that will also confirm a playoffs place for Wrexham, if not for any late surprises from Derby County and Watford.
Hull City and Southampton wanted Lewis O’Brien in 2025
It goes without saying that the entire Wrexham dressing room will be pumped up for achieving a Premier League promotion. This is the place Wrexham have always aimed for ever since they began the promotion streak from the National League under boss Phil Parkinson in 2023.
However, there is one player who has a bigger point to prove. He is £5m summer signing Lewis O’Brien who narrowly missed out on Premier League promotion via the 2021/22 playoffs final. Although the 27-year-old was picked up by Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, he never got to play as regularly as he does for Wrexham.
Thus, it was quite obvious O’Brien would drop down to the Championship in 2025 for more playing time. Coincidentally, both Hull City and Southampton were keen on signing O’Brien for their midfield long before Wrexham were interested in the Englishman.

Going by a Yorkshire Post report, Hull City went as far as to offer the same £5m which Wrexham later paid for O’Brien. Quite often, players regret missing out on other top clubs that wanted to sign them in the past.
Lewis O’Brien doesn’t regret joining Wrexham over Hull City and Southampton
At the moment both Hull City and Southampton are above Wrexham in the table. They have better likelihood of being a Premier League team in May than Wrexham. But Lewis O’Brien doesn’t have any regrets.
In his own words, Leader Live quoted Lewis O’Brien saying: “Since I’ve signed it’s felt like home. I obviously chose the right place. Obviously winning and being higher up in the league makes it a bit more enjoyable, it’s a really nice place to be at the moment.”
Currently, Lewis O’Brien and Wrexham need to take care of the three points against 20th placed West Brom on Friday. Hull City play Oxford United that day, where it’s less likely to expect Hull dropping points.
Their next to next game is at Coventry City which is an important matchday from Wrexham’s point of view. If the Reds beat Southampton on that weekend and Coventry City thrash Hull city, Phil Parkinson’s men will have a more comfortable run-in ahead.
