‘Dead rubber’ – Wrexham fans will agree with West Brom legend over Wales game

Wrexham fans will agree with what West Brom legend Chris Brunt has said over the Wales vs Northern Ireland game.

Tomorrow, Italy will play Bosnia and Herzegovina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying final. Wrexham fans will agree that Wales could have been up there against Italy had they held their nerves in the penalty shootout.

Nothing can be done about it. Wales won’t be heading to the United States for the World Cup and so will, Wrexham duo Nathan Broadhead and Danny Ward. However, their March international break isn’t over on paper.

Wales are pitted against Northern Ireland for a friendly tomorrow evening. Going by the World Cup theme, it’s a typical 3rd place match between two teams who lost their respective semi-finals. Except, there’s no meaningful reward on offer for the team that wins it.

West Brom legend Chris Brunt on Wales vs Northern Ireland

Earlier, Wales and Northern Ireland held the belief that whoever loses this qualifying semi-final will go home then and there. To see them play a second game in March where they can only claim the United Kingdom bragging rights at best, will no doubt annoy fans.

West Brom legend and former Northern Ireland midfielder Chris Brunt also shares the same sentiments. In his own words, BBC quoted Chris Brunt adding: “For the supporters, it’s a complete dead rubber. It is one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever heard – it’s pointless”

Christ Brunt is completely spot on here. FIFA could have opted to just allow Wales and Northern Ireland players an early break that would have served them well amid an exhausting campaign but they didn’t.

Wrexham will hope Nathan Broadhead avoids injury

As for Wrexham fans, they will tune into the Wales vs Northern Ireland game simply because there’s not much club football action going on these days. The nearest Wrexham game is on Friday which is an away fixture at the Hawthorns.

Last time, the Reds slipped to a 3-2 defeat against West Brom so definitely Phil Parkinson’s men won’t want a repeat of it. Another thing no Wrexham fan or the club would want is injuries. Wales boss Craig Bellamy already made a massive mistake against Bosnia and Herzegovina when he left out Nathan Broadhead on the sidelines.

The 27-year-old winger could have make an impact with both crosses and long-range shots but Bellamy thought otherwise. In a meaningless game against Northern Ireland, Bellamy can annoy Wrexham fans again by making Broadhead play the entire game.

Honestly, Wrexham fans are right to demand more minutes for Nathan Broadhead at Wales. But only when it matters. At Northern Ireland, the Reds fanbase will be more concerned with Broadhead picking up any injury rather than enjoy his playmaking.

If Broadhead goes down injured, Wrexham will be back to square one in attack. Spent the whole March without Kieffer Moore and when he returned, there’s no Broadhead to lay key passes and deliveries for him. Hopefully, Broadhead arrives to Wrexham in good health and continue playing a major role in the final month of the Championship campaign.
