Wrexham defender Dom Hyam singled out for blame from 1-0 friendly defeat

Wrexham defender Dom Hyam has been singled out for blame following the Scotland national team’s 1-0 friendly defeat at the hands of Ivory Coast.

The international break is over after 11 long days. Wrexham have waited long for club football to return and international games didn’t help out either. The Reds had plenty of hopes from the Wales national team to book one of the 6 spots available for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Nathan Broadhead, Danny Ward and co couldn’t. Although the awful display against Bosnia and Herzegovina had nothing to do with the Wrexham duo. Wales boss Craig Bellamy refrained from playing either, especially Nathan Broadhead as a late super sub against Bosnia and paid the price for it.

Bailey Cadamarteri inspired his Jamaica team to arrive within touching distance of the World Cup, but they also fell at the final hurdle. Congo nicked a 1-0 winner in the first-half of extra time and ruined Cadamarteri’s dreams of heading to the United States for the World Cup.

Dom Hyam’s centre-back status at Scotland

The situation is a little bit better for Wrexham captain Dom Hyam though. Fortunately, his Scotland team weren’t caught up in the mix of having to leave it all in the playoffs to go through.

However, it doesn’t look like Dom Hyam will be starting during the grand tournament set to take place in June and July. Hyam is 30 years old and an experienced figure in the Wrexham backline. No fan will deny this.

But Scotland have a more competitive squad and a huge squad depth than Wrexham. The fact that Hyam had to wait for his first Scotland start until yesterday tells how much cut-throat competition is present in the Scottish defensive ranks.

Plus, Scotland had lost 1-0 to Japan in the previous days. Thus, Hyam had less margin of error to make against Ivory Coast last night. Call it a misfortune but Scotland lost 1-0 again, this time with Hyam and with the Wrexham captain doing poorly in the lead up to the goal.

In a 1v1 chance against Ivory Coast winger Elye Wahi, Hyam failed to block the shot which was an on-target effort as well. Soon enough, that chance came off the post and Nicolas Pepe turned it in to inflict more misery on an out of form Scotland side.

It proved to be enough invitation for the media to single out Dom Hyan for blame. According to an Edinburgh Evening News report, they rated Hyam as the second worst player behind the Scottish goalkeeper on the day Liam Kelly.

In their own words, Edinburgh Evening News commented on Hyam’s display: “Just a second international cap for the Wrexham defender – his first in three years. Looked shaky early on but improved gradually as the game wore on. Lost his marker from a corner that led to a late chance for the Ivorians.”

Apparently, Dom Hyam has enough work to do to impress his coaches at Scotland. A Wrexham playoffs finish may be enough for Hyam to make the cut in Scotland’s World Cup squad. However, it may take a Premier League promotion to help Hyam’s case for starting any games for Scotland during the summer tournament in United States.
