Matty James makes concerning injury admission (Wrexham will need to act in summer)

Wrexham veteran midfielder Matty James reveals how he has forced his injury return to help the club’s playoff hopes.

Wrexham had little to celebrate in their home defeat to Southampton. Except for Josh Windass’s cool finish to spark hopes of a comeback, perhaps only Matty James’s return from injury in the second half had fans beaming with joy.

To Wrexham fans’ misfortune, their happiness over the veteran’s return may be short‑lived. It turns out Matty James has rushed his recovery to play a part in keeping Wrexham’s playoff hopes alive.

James himself admitted that his injured toe still bothers him. As quoted by the BBC, he said: “I was trying to return, trying not to return, then trying to return. I think it’s hard when the stage of the season that we were at, I was trying to push it and trying to get the balance right.”

Matty James added: “It’s still grumbling a bit now, but I think I’m in a position now where I can train, I can play and just grin and bear it a little bit.”

Matty James makes concerning admission despite injury return

The initial news of Matty James’s injury had sparked all kinds of worrying speculation. With boss Phil Parkinson hinting at a broken toe for Matty, the midfield’s recovery time was expected to be far from brief.

Though James fractured his toe against Millwall in early February, there was no positive update on his recovery until mid‑March. Although he proved Parkinson’s promise of a return after the March break correct, his honest admission that he’s not completely fit raises further concerns.

It’s evident from Matty’s own words that he changed his mind several times before rushing back. If Wrexham were safely in the playoff zone, the veteran would have taken extra care with his recovery.

Despite Matty James’ recent return against Southampton, he missed nine games in between. Although he is now available for lineup selection, boss Parky will be cautious with his minutes.

With Matty still feeling pain in his toe, Phil Parkinson will have little choice but to restrict him to a secondary role in some games. Even if he starts, he may not be able to offer his quality and experience for the full 90 minutes.

It’s a problematic situation for both Wrexham and Matty James. The club can’t ask him to force 90‑minute shifts, nor is the veteran midfielder himself able to contribute as much as he would like to their playoff charge.

Wrexham have got another area to recruit this summer

The recent few weeks have suggested that Wrexham will need significant reinforcements this summer, regardless of whether they reach the Premier League or not. Another target is on its way to being added to the club’s transfer wishlist.

The position in question is central midfield.

It’s no secret that Wrexham’s recent dip in form owes much to their sloppy first‑half displays. Without Matty James or Ben Sheaf, they’ve failed to dictate the flow of the game from the start.

Matty James’ recent admission only deepens the concern. Although he has renewed his contract till summer 2027, his fitness may only worsen after he turns 35 in a couple of months.

This calls for Wrexham to bring in a like-for-like tempo-dictating midfielder this summer. Even a talented young prodigy could work, as long as they use Matty James’s final year to develop the new signing to succeed him.

Matty James and Ben Sheaf’s injuries have much derailed Wrexham’s playoff hopes this time. That should force the club to pre‑plan to avoid a repeat by bringing in a younger, similar profile to James.

Wrexham are still not out of the playoff race. But if they remain in the Championship another season, a central midfielder is essential before they can dream of Premier League promotion.
