Phil Parkinson makes Wrexham feelings clear on EFL’s weird change for 2025/26 season

Phil Parkinson has made Wrexham feelings clear on EFL’s weird Carabao Cup date changes for the 2025/26 season.

The 2026/27 Championship season is 3 months away. There is a World Cup to look forward to before it as well, however, nobody can deny the next Championship season will be one of a kind.

The EFL has already extended the playoffs spots from 4 to 6 long before. That will, no doubt boost plenty of ambitious mid-table clubs who come agonizingly closer to reaching the playoffs but somehow don’t make the cut.

Apart from that, the EFL turned heads with another weird call. Four months ago, EFL announced the key dates for the 2026/27 season including the Carabao Cup opening round dates.

Until last year, teams lying in the Championship kicked off their Carabao Cup campaigns right after playing the first league game. This time, it’s the opposite. Wrexham and other 23 confirmed 2026/27 Championship clubs will begin their new season with the Carabao Cup game and then proceed to the league opener.

As confirmed by the EFL, the Carabao Cup round 1 fixtures will run from 7-9 August 2026. Afterwards, the first Championship, League One and League Two matchdays will be played on the weekend of 14-16 August.

Phil Parkinson makes Wrexham feelings clear on 2025/26 Carabao Cup season opener

Amidst speculations of whether Wrexham will rotate the starting lineup for the season opener in the Carabao Cup, boss Phil Parkinson has clarified the air on the matter.

Speaking to Leader Live, Parkinson indirectly hinted at rotating players saying: “The Carabao Cup game is going to be utilised as our last friendly. That is not being disrespectful to the Carabao Cup but we are going to have to utilise that because of the travelling etc.”

Fresh off a dream FA Cup run in the previous season, it might seem odd at first that Wrexham aren’t invested much in the Carabao Cup. After all, there is a real chance that Wrexham play with a second string lineup in the round 1 and end up exiting the Carabao Cup on day one itself.

But looking at the preseason 2026 fixtures, it makes sense for Wrexham to ignore the Carabao Cup in the early stages. Phil Parkinson’s men are due to face high-profile showdowns against Manchester United, Liverpool, Leeds United and a Sunderland side recently qualified for the Europa League.

Also, there is an anniversary friendly fixture against Polish side Wisla Krakow. All in all, these five games have the potential to cause multiple fatigues and, touchwood but injuries to the Red Dragons squad.

Wrexham don’t want an injury repeat of 2025/26 preseason tour

Last season’s Australia and New Zealand tour was a prime example of that. Wrexham lost both Jay Rodriguez and Ollie Rathbone to long-term injuries during preseason and the pair could only mark their returns with almost half of the Championship season over.

At present, Rodriguez has left the club while Rathbone continues to be an integral part of Parkinson’s attacking plans. Apart from him, Wrexham will need to take things easy with Ben Sheaf and Kieffer Moore’s fitness.

Both of them have had a nightmare 2026 run so far and have spent more time watching the team from the sidelines than contributing to Wrexham’s cause on the pitch.

Lastly, coming to the 2026/27 fixture release dates the EFL will confirm Wrexham’s first few matches on 25th June at 12 PM. Last time, Wrexham got Southampton away on the opening Championship weekend. Let’s wait to find out who will it be the first league opponent for 2026/27.
